1--What is the title of your latest release?

CHEATER

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Detective Kit McKittrick and police psychologist Sam Reeves join forces once again to take down the killer of former homicide lieutenant Frankie Flynn, who was murdered in his retirement home.  More victims fall as Kit and Sam race to solve the case—and Kit tries to protect her heart.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

The city of San Diego is beautiful and offers so many different environments for murder—the beach, the desert, the mountains, the ocean.  I chose a continuing care facility after visiting one with a friend who was looking for a good place for her mother.  I loved how it was its own little mini city, allowing the residents independence while ensuring they received quality care.  Of course, a killer in their midst upsets this balance and Kit must put things back to rights.

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Oh, yes.  Kit is prickly but her heart is a giant marshmallow.  I also have fallen in love with her family—Harlan, Betsy, and Akiko.  I’d love to hang out with all of them!

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Prickly, compassionate, intelligent.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

How much money one needs to qualify for a black Amex card, lol.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

A little bit of both.  If it’s a big thing that will change the flow of the remaining story, I’ll edit as I write.  But normally I jot notes in the margins and come back later to edit those changes.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

I’m not really a foodie.  My favorite foods are the classic comfort foods.  Right now chicken pot pie is at the top of my faves list.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I write in a spare room converted into office space.  I have a super-large monitor and space for a coffee cup on my very cluttered desk.  Invariably my office is filled with boxes as it’s where everything gets put when no one knows where else to put it.

10--Who is an author you admire?

Christine Feehan.  She’s written dozens and dozens of books over the course of her career, and each one is unique and a real treasure to read!

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

I’d have to say my very first book which no one will ever read.  It was my personal joy, joining my characters each night when I’d gotten my children into bed.  It showed me that I could write a story and gave me the confidence to write another.  (Which no one will ever read either, lol.)  But then I wrote a third and thought, “I’m ready to try to get published.”

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I was driving from work to a mandatory customer dinner in a nearby restaurant.  My agent called me and said, “We got a two-book offer.”  And she read me the terms.  Inside I was screaming in excitement!  But I managed to remain calm and said, “I think we should take it.”  Then I ended the call and called my husband who was so happy for me.  My next call was to my BFF and we squealed together.  Then I had to go to that customer dinner and behave like I hadn’t just gotten “THE CALL.”  It was a long evening.  I eventually got home and was able to call everyone who knew I was writing a book.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Paranormal.  I love vampires and shifters.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

Talladega Nights:  The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.  It makes me laugh and is my go-to movie when I’ve had a bad day.

15--What is your favorite season?

Winter.  I like it cold.

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

With my husband and close friends.  We share a dinner and a cake and just hang out.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Poker Face.  It’s like Columbo plus The Fugitive plus a human lie detector.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Comfort food—meatloaf, pot pie, chicken and dumplings.

19--What do you do when you have free time?

I knit, catch up on my reading, and sleep!

20--What can readers expect from you next?

My next New Orleans book—BURIED TOO DEEP—will be released in August.  Burke Broussard’s crew is back with Phin Bishop’s book!

CHEATER by Karen Rose

Cheater

A shocking murder leaves an affluent retirement community reeling in this riveting, high-stakes second installment of the San Diego Case Files, from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Karen Rose.

Death is not an unfamiliar visitor to Shady Oaks Retirement Village, which provides San Diego with premier elderly support from independent retiree housing to full-time hospice care. But when a resident’s body is found brutally stabbed and his apartment ransacked, it’s clear there’s someone deadly in their community. Detective Katherine “Kit” McKittrick quickly discovers that Shady Oaks is full of skeleton-riddled closets, and most tenants prefer to keep their doors firmly closed to the SDPD.

A longtime volunteer at the retirement facility, Dr. Sam Reeves honors his late grandfather’s memory by playing the piano for the residents regularly. So it shouldn’t be such a surprise when Kit crosses paths with him during her investigation, after she’d avoided the criminal psychologist—and the emotions he evokes—for the last six months.

Sam’s rapport within the retirement village proves vital to the case, and the pair find themselves working together once again—much to Kit’s dismay. But she is determined to apprehend the shadow of death lurking around Shady Oaks...and equally determined to ignore the feelings she’s developing for a certain psychologist.
