1--What is the title of your latest release?

My latest release is MIDNIGHT CARESS, the last of the miniseries within the Midnight series, the Women of Midnight. The other two are Midnight Kiss and Midnight Embrace. Midnight Caress comes out June 20.

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

A talented young analyst, Riley Robinson, discovers that the United States might be going to war with China on the basis of a lie. There are those who want to shut her up but they will have to go through Pierce Jordan, former SEAL, first.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

Well, deepfake images came from the National Reconnaissance Office which is in Chantilly, Virginia, just outside Washington DC, where the heroine works. I changed the name of the intelligence-gathering agency to the National Surveillance Office. But the whole novel takes place in Washington DC.

4--Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Oh yeah. She’s smart and friendly. She’s known hard times and risen above them. She’s a really good friend to her friends, loyal and supportive. Exactly the kind of person I like.

5--What are three words that describe your hero?

Steadfast, brave, loyal.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Well, I learned more than I want to know about deepfakes. We are in for a world of hurt, because soon deepfake photos and videos will be indistinguishable from the real thing. You will not be able to tell a lie from the truth and you will not be able to trust your own eyes.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I do some light edits, but basically, I try to finish the first draft to get a clear arc of the book before going back and starting to edit the actual writing. That way I’ve already made all my mistakes and can fix them in the rewrite.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Sigh. Cheese. Particularly French cheese. The French have a real knack. Camembert, Brie, Bleu de Bresse, Crottin. They are totally my downfall. A good cheese and a couple of slices of five grain bread and a glass of wine and I am yours.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I’m lucky enough to have a really nice study, with a door that closes. I live in a beautiful small city in the south of Italy called Matera. The Region is Basilicata. Our apartment is on almost the highest point of the city and is the penthouse apartment. We’re lucky enough to have a huge terrace circling the apartment, as big as the living space. Outside my window is a huge gorgeous Mediterranean pine tree where the birds love to nest (and, alas, poop). My study overlooks a vista of valleys and includes the Lago di San Giuliano, which I am told is the largest

World Wildlife Fund reserve in Europe. If I had a strong enough telescope I could see the greek temple where Pythagorus taught, 15 miles away. I have to work hard to keep my focus on my work!!

10--Who is an author you admire?

There are lots of writers I admire. First and foremost, Nora Roberts, who has given me countless hours of enjoyment. In romance, I also enjoy Katie Reus’s books and of course the books of my bestie, the fabulous Shannon McKenna.

I love thrillers. Some of my favorite thriller authors are Barry Eisler, Lee Child, Dean Koontz, James Patterson, David Baldacci. I also love Andy Weir. I have read the ending of Hail Mary dozens of times, and still get a tear in my eye.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

I can’t think of one specific book but definitely books, in general, changed my life. I was an only child and when my parents got divorced, what saved my life was living across the street from the county library. Libraries are magic and must be defended with everything we’ve got. Books gave me insights in the world and when I started learning languages, books in French and German just opened up my mind. Books are absolutely essential to a well-lived life.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

Before becoming a professional writer, I was a simultaneous interpreter. I was working in Brussels, relaxing in my hotel room after work. I got a call on the hotel phone on March 6, 1998 (well before cell phones) and it was Hilary Sares, of Kensington’s Precious Gems category romance line. She wanted to buy my book, Bernadette’s Bluff. And she asked if I had any others and, why yes, I did. I’d been writing and submitting and getting rejections for 8 years and had 5 novels in my drawer. So that year I published 5 novels!

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

I write romance so of course I read it. But my very first love, as a kid, was science fiction. I avidly read all the classics as a kid. Asimov, Heinlein, Pohl, McCaffrey, Simak … And now I love thrillers, the more exciting, the higher the stakes, the better.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

Right now, off the top of my head, I still love Burn After Reading. The Coen Brothers at their best.

15--What is your favorite season?

Oh, the fall, definitely. The air has cooled but the earth still maintains its warmth. Those long late summer evenings. Things start heating up after the torpor of the summer. I loved loved loved school and when I was a student, the fall meant a return to school.

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I celebrate my milestones with friends and family but the ordinary birthdays, mainly with husband and son. We have a favorite restaurant, and we always go there. It has a huge outdoor terrace under a pergola of wisteria. Gorgeous!

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Oh, so many! The Diplomat, Bridgerton, the Mandalorian, Extrapolations, House of Dragons, the delicious Slow Horses.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Mediterranean cuisine, mainly Italian. But then I live in Italy.

19--What do you do when you have free time?

I am retired from my day job and I have allowed myself the luxury of not rushing around, but taking my time with everything. Mostly, I read. I read a lot, and it feels like such a gift to be able to do it properly, sinking into the book.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

In recent Midnight books, my heroes and heroines made use of the services of Black Inc., one of the world’s largest security companies, owned by Jacob Black. The next book is his story, and his reuniting with his long lost first love. Black Inc. : Jacob.

MIDNIGHT CARESS by Lisa Marie Rice

Women of Midnight #3

Midnight Caress

A romantic technothriller

Lisa Marie Rice's books can be summed up in one word — addictive!" — Katie Reus

They’ll kill for what’s in her head….

Riley Robinson is in deep trouble. She’s the only one who knows that a video that could catapult the world into full-scale war is just a deepfake, but someone out there will stop at nothing to silence her. Soon, a whole company of ruthless mercenaries is running her down. The only one in her corner is Pierce Jordan, a lone former SEAL that her friends sent to help her, but one man is enough. One hard-eyed, hard-bodied, extremely sexy, extremely capable man. And he’ll do anything to keep her safe...

Over his dead body…

Pierce Jordan was sent by friends to protect a computer nerd girl in trouble. Turns out the nerd girl is a brilliant bombshell, and the trouble could burn the world to the ground. She’s way out of his league, but it’s up to him to protect the knowledge in her gorgeous head, keep her from getting slaughtered, and convince the world that she’s telling the truth—all while fighting a raging hunger that could destroy them both…
