1--What is the title of your latest release?

RETURN TO HUMMINGBIRD WAY

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

In this heartwarming small town romance, can three months, two planning projects, and a meddling grandmother finally make two high school hate crushes see just how right they are for each other?

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

On my first visit to the Outer Banks, I was sitting in this cute little seating area on the second floor of the Sanderling Resort in Duck, North Carolina staring out at the water, and suddenly I just knew that I wanted to write a series set in the Outer Banks. I immediately started drafting the ideas for a multi-book series.

4--Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Absolutely! Sinclair actually reminds me a lot of one of my best childhood friends. She’s supportive, ride-or-die, and will do anything for her friends and family. She’s a focused, ambitious businesswoman with plans to conquer her industry. Bonus: Sin’s love language is cooking amazing Southern cuisine and caring for the people she loves. Yes, Sin might bruise your ego telling you the straight-up truth about yourself, but then she’s going to make you an amazing Southern feast to soothe those wounds and help you make a plan to get your life right. Who doesn’t need a friend like that?

5--What are three words that describe your hero?

Protective. Earnest. Dexterous.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I learned a lot about Wilmington, North Carolina - where the hero and heroine take a road trip, and I definitely plan to visit there. I also discovered some amazing recipes for a variety of foods. Anyone want fluffy, homemade biscuits, peach preserves, and candied bacon?

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I do a lot of editing as I draft, which is good because I’m usually up against a deadline and need to send the book off the moment I type THE END.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Like Sinclair, I love a good old-fashioned Southern feast. That hasn’t changed since I moved to a plant-based diet several months ago. My current favorite Southern-style feast is candied sweet potatoes, vegan collard greens, vegan fried chicken (oyster mushrooms), and baked vegan macaroni and cheese with a side of sweet tea.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I have a dedicated office space, which I love. It’s also where I film all my livestream episodes of my YouTube show Story Behind the Story with Reese Ryan where romance readers and authors connect. But I have five desks in the house, and I often write in another three or four places in the house. In fact, I’m typing this from my bed using my lap desk. I’m not a person who enjoys writing in coffee shops. I’m too easily distracted. If I have to write where other people are, I need to wear really immersive headphones and play instrumental music.

10--Who is an author you admire?

There are two authors I really, really admire and that is Beverly Jenkins and Brenda Jackson. They’re both talented, prolific, and generous in helping other authors. I adore both of them.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

The book that put me on the path to becoming a storyteller is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I was pretty young when I read the book. But I remember the emotional rollercoaster that book took me on. The swooning, the laughter, moments that I wanted to shake both the hero and heroine. At the end of the book, I remember thinking that I wanted to give that same experience to other readers. That’s when I knew I wanted to become a writer.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

I’m coming up on my ten-year anniversary of being published. I got the call from Angela James who was the Executive Editor of Carina Press at the time. I was beyond excited to learn that the book that became Making the First Move was going to be published.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

I read primarily contemporary romance. However, I do read other genres and subgenres of romance which include historical romance and romantic suspense - subgenres I have an immediate interest in writing. And right now, I’m reading lots of non-fiction about the historical period I plan on writing about.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

Pretty Woman is my go-to answer because it’s been my favorite movie for so long. But I love a host of romantic comedies including The Wedding Planner, The Wedding Date, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Brown Sugar, Hitch, Parent Trap (with Lindsay Lohan), and While You Were Sleeping. I could watch those eight movies on a loop and be happy as a clam.

15--What is your favorite season?

I love the concept of spring. Flowers blooming. Birds chirping. Planting my garden. The idea that everything is fresh and new. But here in North Carolina something else blooms during spring. POLLEN. And not just the usual, Midwestern pollen. Tree pollen coats everything and invades your car and home, wreaking havoc on my allergies. Therefore, fall is my favorite time of year. Same mild temperatures but none of the pollen.

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Simply. I might treat myself to some type of cake and perhaps go out to a special dinner. But as long as I’ve got my cake, I’m just as happy having a simple meal at home while curled up on the couch watching a favorite movie or binging a new television show.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

My current obsession is Will Trent. The characters are flawed and complex, the relationships are volatile, and the cases are gripping. It’s a brilliant show and the cast is perfect. I plan to start reading the books by Karin Slaughter.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Right now, I’m exploring all things plant-based. I was never a big meat eater anyway, but I’m floored by how delicious foods can be without meat or animal products. My current vegan fascination is the variety of mushrooms out there and just how delicious they can be when prepared thoughtfully.

19--What do you do when you have free time?
I’m usually spending time with my family: my husband, my two grandsons whom I adore, or my mother. Sometimes all three. LOL. When I’m enjoying some alone time, I’m probably going to spend it reading.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

Readers can expect a lot from me this year because it’s going to be a wild ride. I have seven releases this year. RETURN TO HUMMINGBIRD WAY is my second release this year. The next two books in my Valentine Vineyards series ONE SUMMER OF LOVE and SNOWBOUND SECOND CHANCE will be released at the end of August. I have a secret project coming out later this year. Then WORKING WITH HER CRUSH - the first book in the Dynasties: Willowvale quartet I collaborated on with Jules Bennett - will be released at the end of October. BREAKING THE BAD BOY'S RULES - my second book in the Dynasties: Willowvale series will be released near the end of November.

Holly Grove Island #2

Return to Hummingbird

Can three months, two planning projects, and a meddling grandmother finally make these high school hate crushes see just how right they are for each other?

Ambitious real estate agent Sinclair Buchanan is thrilled her childhood best friend has returned to their hometown and is marrying her first love. But the former beauty queen and party planner extraordinaire hadn't anticipated being asked to work with her high school hate crush, Garrett Davenport, to plan their mutual best friends' wedding. Five years ago, they spent one incredible night together—a mistake she won't make again. But when her plans for partnership in her firm require her to work with Rett to renovate his grandmother's seaside cottage, it becomes much harder to ignore their complicated history.

Rett returned to Holly Grove Island to celebrate the upcoming marriage of his two closest friends. And when they require a minor miracle to pull off their sprint to the altar, Rett feels obligated to lend a hand. But when his grandmother cooks up a scheme for him and Sin to partner on the renovation of her seaside cottage, he can't say no to the woman who sacrificed so much for him. So what if he's had a killer crush on Sin since they were teens and he hasn't been able to get their night together out of his head? He just needs to stay focused and stick to the plan. Then he'll head off on his next journey.

But when it comes to Sinclair Buchanan, things are never quite that simple. And this time, they just might discover how wrong they've been about each other and how right they are together.
