1--What is the title of your latest release?

THAT SUMMER FEELING

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

A divorcée attends an adults-only week of a summer sleepaway camp, where she runs into a man from her past that she believes she’s meant to be with, only to fall head over heels for his sister instead.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

The summer camp setting is so integral to the plot that once I landed on my idea for the premise, the setting came to life alongside it. I’ve never been to a proper sleepaway camp, but I spent some time on the Georgia/North Carolina border a few years ago, and it felt like just the place to plant my fictional summer oasis. It was so perfectly idyllic—greenery and mountains and lakes galore—I knew Camp Carl Cove would fit right in.

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

My protagonist Garland would be fun to talk to and quick to give out a meaningful compliment. I’d definitely hang out with her!

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Openhearted, eager, courageous

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

A lot of this book is about reconnecting with your inner child and going after the things you forgotten you’ve always wanted to do. Writing from that place has definitely helped center those ideals in my own life.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I absolutely edit as I draft. I admire anyone who can trudge forward without looking back, but that has never been me! Once I get closer to the end of a book I have gotten better about not looping back as much, but when I’m in the middle of writing something, I am often gazing fondly at my long-completed chapters and making little changes to them instead of drafting new pieces.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

I have a very boring palate. I usually answer pizza for this question, but in the past year my love of mashed potatoes has become a bit of an inside joke among the people I see each day. So this year I say mashed potatoes!

9--Describe your writing space/office!

My technical writing space is the desk in my peachy bedroom, but most days I like to get out in the Los Angeles sunshine and write at a coffee shop.

10--Who is an author you admire?

Truly so many, but I am lucky enough to call Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka close friends of mine, and I really admire their work. They are so diligent, thoughtful, and genuinely hardworking. They deserve all the good things the book world has to offer them!

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

I really want to answer this by saying The Hunger Games series again, but I will show restraint and explore a different lifechanging book. Just please know that The Hunger Games books are always in my mind and heart. When I was a kid I read THE CASTLE IN THE ATTIC by Elizabeth Winthrop. It’s a children’s fantasy, and nowadays I remember the feeling of reading it more than I do the actual content of the story. I just know it was so immersive and wondrous, it showed me how good books can really transport you.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I don’t have a great story for THAT SUMMER FEELING other than I found out this book was going to be published on 2/2/22. Since it’s a book about signs and messages from the universe, of course I appreciate seeing the angel number 222 in that date!

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Romance is obviously a forever favorite, but I’ve been enjoying reading through the big book club books I missed from the last few years, which tend to span across a lot of genres. It’s a great way for me to break up my reading habits, and they’re always fun and well-crafted.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

In the spirit of my book about summer camp, I will answer this as my favorite summer camp movie, which is obviously THE PARENT TRAP, Lindsay Lohan version.

15--What is your favorite season?

I grew up in the Chicago suburbs, which means I’m no stranger to cold. However, I’ve lived in Los Angeles for twelve years now, so I have no tolerance for it anymore. It’s been really rainy and cold (for LA!!!) these last few weeks, which makes me want to say that summer is my favorite. But not the sweltering back end of summer. The early weeks when it’s perfectly pleasant here. I long for it every single day. That summer feeling if you will…

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

This year I went to a ceramic painting place and painted a plate for my own birthday. Then I played a murder mystery game after that with my friends. It was lovely.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I just finished WITH LOVE, FROM COLD WORLD by Alicia Thompson, and it was fantastic. The main characters, Lauren and Asa, were both so unique and complicated (in the best way), and their dynamic crackled.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Always and forever the cuisine of pizza.

19--What do you do when you have free time?

Hang out with my friends. That’s the best way for me to refill my creative well.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

Nothing I can share yet!

THAT SUMMER FEELING by Bridget Morrissey

That Summer Feeling

Paste Magazine's Most Anticipated Contemporary Romance Books of 2023

When a divorced woman attends a sleepaway camp for adults, she reconnects with a man from her past—only to fall head over heels for his sister instead.

Garland Moore used to believe in magic, the power of optimism, and signs from the universe. Then her husband surprised her with divorce papers over Valentine's Day dinner. Now Garland isn’t sure what to believe anymore, except that she’s clearly never meant to love again. When new friends invite her to spend a week at their reopened sleepaway camp, she and her sister decide it’s an opportunity to enjoy the kind of summer getaway they never had as kids. If Garland still believed in signs, this would sure seem like one. Summer camp is a chance to let go of her past and start fresh.

Nestled into the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains, Camp Carl Cove provides the exact escape Garland always dreamed of, until she runs into Mason—the man she had a premonition about after one brief meeting years ago. No matter how she tries to run, the universe appears determined to bring love back into Garland’s life. She even ends up rooming with Mason’s sister Stevie, a vibrant former park ranger who is as charming as she is competitive. The more time Garland spends with Stevie, the more the signs confuse her. The stars are aligning in a way Garland never could have predicted.

Amid camp tournaments and moonlit dances, Garland continues to be pulled toward the beautiful blonde outdoorswoman who makes her laugh and swoon. Summer camp doesn’t last forever, but if Garland can learn to trust her heart, the love she finds there just might.
