Kelley Armstrong | Natural Beauty, Isolation, and Mystery in the Yukon

tumblrtwitterfacebook

1--What is the title of your latest release?

MURDER AT HAVEN’S ROCK

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

A town is being built in the Yukon wilderness for people who need to disappear, but even before it’s finished, two members of the construction crew do disappear…into the forest without a trace.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

It’s a spinoff of a book set in the Yukon—new town but same concept. I stuck with the Yukon for all the reasons I first chose it (natural beauty & isolation)

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Casey would not be the most personable companion on first meeting, but if I had time to get past that, I would definitely like to hang out with her.

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Driven, idealistic, compassionate.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Placer mining. The Yukon was the site of the Klondike gold rush, but I hadn’t touched on placer mining in previous books. It’s a central part of this one—modern, small scale gold mining in rivers etc.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I need to get the first draft out or I get mired in editing.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Bakery chocolate-chip cookies. I have favorite shops in cities I regularly visit, and I buy extra to freeze, as a change of pace from homemade.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

We built a new house last year, and my writing space is finally done. I have a tower—two small rooms that look out on Lake Erie. The lower one is my business office, and the upper one is where I write.

10--Who is an author you admire?

There are so many, and I hate to pick a name and leave off others. There are authors I admire for their writing, authors I admire for their long-term success, and authors I admire for themselves—who they are as a person. I’ve been blessed to know many authors who fulfill all three.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

There isn’t a specific one because I’ve been reading voraciously all my life. For me, books in general shaped my life rather than one book changing it.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

That’s a tricky one for me. When I first heard that we had a viable offer, I was at work, but that first offer came from the UK, which was great—Bitten was definitely going to be published—but then came the nail-biting waiting for it to be picked up by a Canadian and American publisher, which meant it would actually be published someplace where I could see it on a shelf.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

All of them! I don’t have a favorite, which explains why I also write in pretty much all of them (sometimes within the same book).

14--What’s your favorite movie?

The Princess Bride

15--What is your favorite season?

Autumn

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Quietly. I have no problem getting older—every year is something to celebrate—but I’m always happiest doing that at home with my family.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

My latest highly recommended read is Leslye Penelope’s The Monsters We Defy. A supernatural heist set in Jazz-age DC.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Is “food” a cuisine? As with books, I don’t have a favorite. I like to switch it up.

19--What do you do when you have free time?

Read and play video games.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

Next up is a young adult thriller, SOMEONE IS ALWAYS WATCHING. A group of former friends who’ve drifted are thrown back together by an act of violence…which one of them may have committed.

MURDER AT HAVEN'S ROCK by Kelley Armstrong

Haven's Rock

Murder at Haven's Rock

New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong’s Rockton Novels had one of the most unique towns in crime fiction. Murder at Haven's Rock is a spinoff, a fresh start... with a few new dangers that threaten everything before it even begins.

Haven’s Rock, Yukon. Population: 0

Deep in the Yukon wilderness, a town is being built. A place for people to disappear, a fresh start from a life on the run. Haven’s Rock isn’t the first town of this kind, something detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton, know first-hand. They met in the original town of Rockton. But greed and deception led the couple to financing a new refuge for those in need. This time around, they get to decide which applicants are approved for residency.

There’s only one rule in Haven’s Rock: stay out of the forest. When two of the town's construction crew members break it and go missing, Casey and Eric are called in ahead of schedule to track them down. When a body is discovered, well-hidden with evidence of foul play, Casey and Eric must find out what happened to the dead woman, and locate those still missing. The longer Casey and Eric don’t know what happened, the more danger everyone is in.

About Kelley Armstrong

Kelley Armstrong

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers’ dismay. Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.
