Morgana Bevan | 20 Questions: WINNING NIA

1--What is the title of your latest release?

WINNING NIA

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

WINNING NIA is a steamy second chance rock star romance following a struggling music photographer and the guitarist who broke her heart ten years ago determined to win her back.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I’ve never read a romance book set in Wales - they’re all either England or Scotland if not only the US - and being Welsh and living here, I wanted to read stories set here. Thus far all of my books are set in Wales and my cast of characters in my rock star books are all Welsh, making the most of Wales’s rich musical history.

4--Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Definitely. Nia’s ambitious and focused. She’s also a great, ride or die friend. I’d love to be able to surround myself with people like her.

5--What are three words that describe your hero?

Determined. Organized. Gregarious.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Lighthouses in the UK are remote operated. In the book there’s a storyline where they’re trying to raise money for a visitor’s center at a nature reserve. Well, in the first draft, they were trying to raise money to get the lighthouse working again because the bulb went out… Yeah, turns out those bulbs have backups to their backups and someone on the other side of the country would know it had died before the locals did. I rewrote that one quick.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

Wait until I’m done. I share chapter by chapter with my critique partner as I write so I’ll correct typos flagged by Google Docs but otherwise I don’t touch it until draft two is finished.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Melted peanut butter and dark chocolate. My waistline hates me for it, but oh my is it addictive.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

Well, I have an office. As in I have a desk, with a second monitor in my spare bedroom… I’ve yet to use it for more than an hour at a time. Mostly I write on the sofa and in bed, it’s warmer. I recently bought a lap desk to stop myself slouching while doing it and that’s been a major game changer. Sometimes I’ll write at my dining table surrounded by all my books but that only happens in the summer.

10--Who is an author you admire?

Keri Arthur. I stumbled across Kez’s work when I was fourteen. She triggered my love for Urban Fantasy and started me down the writing track. Back then she’d offer me advice via email and then when she was forced to go indie, she opened my eyes to what it actually meant, the work that went into it and the terrible state of affairs in traditional publishing. Most people would have lost their publisher after twenty odd years and shrugged their shoulders, giving up. She dived into it, learning anything she could. I can honestly say she is the reason I indie published and I’ll always be grateful to her.

Four Psychos (The Dark Side Book 1) by [Kristy Cunning]

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

It’s more a series. Kristy Cunning’s FOUR PSYCHOS was the first reverse harem that sucked me right in. I devoured all four books in the series within two days before Christmas. Before this book, I’d read one rock star RH that I was surprised to enjoy but I didn’t think I’d like them beyond that one. I hadn’t in the past. Then I accidentally landed on Kristy’s books and ended up binging all of them and another four series from different authors over two weeks. I now have RH ideas rattling at their box for an out.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

Well, I’m indie so there wasn’t one. I decided a year before I published that I would be going indie. I started learning everything I could on book marketing, social media marketing, tools of the trade. When my first advance reviews started trickling in, proving that I didn’t just think I’d written a good book, other people thought so too and they loved the characters as much as me. It was a nerve-wracking and exhilarating moment.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

It changes. Sometimes it’s hockey or rock star romance, right now it’s reverse harem with an urban fantasy vibe - a story that runs over three or more books, focuses hugely on complicated worldbuilding and doesn’t give a HEA until the very end. Like Jade Bones Hell’s Fire Burning Series or Helen Scott’s Cerberus series. I think these authors are just the Queens of a well-placed cliffhanger.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

Right now, Tick Tick Boom! on Netflix. I’d seen this show in London a couple of years ago and found it touching, but back then I was in my early twenties and time had no meaning. Tick Tick Boom! the film released the month I turned thirty. The same age Jonathan Larson wrote about for this autobiographical musical. He had this sense that his time was running out (unfortunately he was right) and he couldn’t get arrested. Now by the time the film dropped, I already had two books out but the drive, like Jonathan’s, to prove myself is still in me. So, for the second time in my life, Jonathan Larson helped shape my outlook on my life. He did it with Rent when I was in Uni and he did it again just as I said goodbye to my twenties. The film was made with love by Lin-Manuel Miranda and it just made the film all the better and all the more emotional with a cameo cast of the who’s who of Broadway history.

15--What is your favorite season?

Spring. It’s not crazy hot but it’s not freezing either in the UK. We might actually get some decent days without rain. It’s also the start of my gardening season so I can stop resisting the itch to sow seeds and get plants in the ground.

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Pretty low key honestly. A glass of wine with some friends.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

Mira Lyn Kelly’s DIRTY DEAL. It released in November and I read it in one sitting. My first single parent or nanny romance but it was everything I’ve come to expect from Mira Lyn Kelly. It was both heartwarming and hot AF. The angst that came with one half hating the other and pure satisfaction of the playboy hockey player from previous books being tamed. I loved it.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Indian food. I’m vegan and the choices in Indian cooking are wonderfully diverse.

19--What do you do when you have free time?

Free time? It almost feels like a foreign concept right now. When I have a break, I’m generally devouring all the books. My allotment preparation is about to start in earnest, so my Sundays from now on are going to be spent getting muddy on the plot. When the current world situation allows, I love to go to gigs and the theatre. I’m a musical theatre junkie. Eventually, I’d love to go back to ballroom dancing and maybe try out aerial silks.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

In May, my third rock star romance releases. It’s called Enticing Mel. Readers reading on from WINNING NIA will already know what’s coming in this book. It’s a second chance, secret baby romance following Rhiannon’s bassist, Dan, and his childhood sweetheart. Also set in Wales.

True Platinum #2

Winning Nia

A Rockstar Romance

I don't need a rockstar to be my knight in shining armour. Especially one who already had his chance.

My first love broke my heart when I was sixteen. James Tyler was everything I’d ever wanted, until he up and left. That’s what I get for falling for a musician whose plans for world domination never included me.

My second love, photography, would never let me down.

Or so I thought until I discovered that making it as a music photographer is a lot harder in reality than in my dreams – and my savings account can only take a beating for so long before I have to swallow my pride and start grovelling to my arrogant, estranged father.

And if things couldn’t get any worse, James is back…

Arriving with a job offer I shouldn’t refuse, and a confession big enough to send shockwaves through the past, he throws my entire life upside down. But I don’t care how successful his band is or that he insists I’m the one for him. If he thinks I forgive him tossing me aside ten years ago, he’s got another thing coming.

To anyone else, James is a second chance wrapped in muscle and black ink. Too bad for him, I’ve never believed in second chances.

Winning Nia is a full length steamy rock star romance. It is the second book following the Rhiannon men and the second in the True Platinum Series. Can be read as a standalone.
If you love obsessed rock stars, determined independent heroines who want to solve their own problems and childhood sweethearts getting a second chance, then Winning Nia is for you.
