Samanthe Beck | 20 Questions: WILD IN CAPTIVITY

amazonInstagrambookbubfacebooktwittergoodreads

1--What is the title of your latest release?

WILD IN CAPTIVITY

2--What is it about?

Ambitious L.A. lawyer Isabelle Marcano would rather run a mile in her Manolos than fly off to rustic Captivity, Alaska. But close the client’s sale successfully and her firm will find room on the letterhead for one more name. Still, taking a career detour to a place that doesn’t even have a Starbucks sounds like the seventh level of hell.

Then her best friend points out the town has something stronger on tap than caffeine. Testosterone. With two single men to every single woman, this assignment might just be the best thing to happen to her sex life since the invention of the waterproof Rabbit.

Until her sexy client introduces her as his fiancée to hide what she’s doing in town, and all her aspirations of hot Lumberjack Sex fly out the airplane window.

Though...fiancés do have sex, right? Those who don’t want to answer to small-town busybodies better look like they do, epically, even when the mere prospect plays havoc with her professional responsibilities. And her hormones.

Her firm’s getting antsy to finalize the merger. But the more she learns about Trace, about why he’s selling, the more conflicted she becomes about the deal. Failure to close means losing the partnership she’s always wanted, but the bigger failure might just be kissing Trace goodbye…

3--What do you love about the setting of your book?

Practically everything! Captivity, Alaska is a small, fictional town along the Inner Passage. It boasts scenic beauty, cold weather, hot men, and a cast of quirky local busybodies who never miss a trick!

4--How did your heroine surprise you?

I envisioned Isabelle Marcano as a hard-driving urbanite with her eyes on a prize and a similarly goal-oriented attitude toward addressing her long-ignored…ahem…sex life. But Izzy turned out to have excellent emotional intelligence, a fun sense of humor, and a super-squishy soft side!

5--Why will readers love your hero?

To sum it up in five little words…Bear daddy in the wild! Trace is a big, burly, outdoorsy bush pilot who doesn’t know quite what to make of the tiny, tightly wound fashionista who drops into his world.

6--What was one of your biggest challenges while writing this book (spoiler-free, of course!)?

Some books flow, some don’t. Honestly, WILD IN CAPTIVITY flowed. I gave myself the freedom to have fun with the characters and the story and not worry too much about what imprint I was aiming for, word count, or other logistics. I sat down at my computer with a smile on my face the whole time I worked on this story!

If I had to identify a challenge, I would say getting the wildlife right. I haven’t had the privilege of visiting Alaska yet, so populating Captivity with the proper flora and fauna took some research.

7--Do you look forward to or do you dread the revision process?

Both! My Entangled editor, Heather Howland, and I have worked together on fifteen books. I understand her and trust her judgment. Even so, my stomach drops when the edit letter hits my inbox. I usually ignore it for a day and mentally prepare, (drink heavily). Once I read through her comments, I give myself another day to let everything percolate. Then the ideas start forming and I dig in knowing the changes will make the story tighter and stronger.

8--What’s your favorite snack to have on hand while writing?

Um, does red wine count as a snack?

9--Where would you go for an ideal writer’s retreat?

Anywhere with my writing besties, Hayson Manning, Maggie Kelley, and Robin Bielman! Okay, French Polynesia with my girlies. Overwater bungalows for all!

10--What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve received?

“Just keep writing…” (Said by my sister, mimicking Dory’s “Just keep swimming…” ditty from FINDING NEMO).

11--Who is the fictional character you want to hang out with the most? (anyone in literature!)

I’m currently reading Robin Bielman’s fabulous upcoming release, THE WEDDING CRASHER AND THE COWBOY, and I wish I could move into that entire story. To limit my answer to one character, I’ll choose her hero, Maverick Owens—he’s just so…gah!

12--What’s one of your earliest book memories?

My mom has always been an avid reader. When my sister and I were young, she took us to the library with her every week. During one trip I stumbled across a copy of JAWS and chose it as my book. Mom was fine with it, (because obviously she’d never read the story or seen the movie), so I got my first glimpse of a sex scene courtesy of Peter Benchley. I was, like, nine.

13--If you had to write in a different genre, what would it be and why?

I’d choose to be a travel writer, so I could visit all the places and do all the things!

14--What song will automatically put you in a good mood?

Ha! MMMBop by Hanson. I heard it again recently and realized the matching DNA harmonizing on the hook works like aural Prozac.

15--What is your favorite way to practice self-care?

I do yoga almost every morning. Anti-social yoga, as it’s just me and Julia Marie on Amazon Prime, but it makes me feel centered and zen and ready to tackle the day.

16--What can you eat and never get sick of?

Too many things! I love to eat! My latest obsession is the OG Burger from a local restaurant here in Cincinnati called The Rusty Bucket. I know it’s not the most appetizing name for an eatery, but, trust me, they are serving up burger perfection.

17--Will you share a favorite, recent-ish book you recommend?

I’m not quite done with it yet, but I am loving THE WEDDING CRASHER AND THE COWBOY by Robin Bielman. It releases October 26th, but fans of funny, sexy contemporary romance should pre-order now!

18--Do you have any hobbies?

My son talked me into skateboarding and I’m getting pretty good on a longboard!

19--Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Left to my own devices I think I’m a night owl, but momming has turned me into an early bird.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

At least two more books set in Captivity!
