Every day from now through the end of the year (and even a
few days into 2019), we’ll be sharing our reviewers’ favorite reads of 2018. A different genre
will be featured every day! We’ll share why these books were some of our favorites and what
made them so special. We hope you’ll share yours in the comments, too!
Up first, our favorite mysteries, of all kinds - thriller,
psychological, romantic suspense… Check back next week for cozy mysteries, though! Below
they are listed in no particular order:

I recently read this and knew straight away it was my thriller
of the year. A Canadian national park and nearby town try to fend off a big-money ski resort
proposal. We learn so much about the get rich quick types behind this, the activists are driven
to protect their park, the geology, and nature of the wilderness area, the work of police and
journalists.

I was completely enthralled with this historical mystery
series. There was an ease about everything, probably because I'm a huge Downton Abbey fan,
and these characters were so intriguing. Kat Holloway may present herself as a simple cook,
but she's determined, resilient, and fiercely protective of the people she cares about. I hope
there are many more books following Kat, and more descriptions of the delicious food she
cooks each day!

JD Robb is practically a given for this category as I love each
and every book of hers. Leverage in Death stood out even more so because of the unique and
horrifying nature of the murders.

I have read (and re-read a number of times) and own all of
the books in this long-running series and always hate to wait for the next one once I’ve
finished the current release. This one is no different!

The love between Jack and Shelly shines through the pages.
Sharon Sala delves into some deep and painful real-life issues that break your heart, even as
the love between Jack and Shelly warms it.

Within the story at the center of LOOK FOR ME there are so
many possibilities – so many guilty possible parties – that as an armchair detective you will
find yourself repeatedly claiming success. LOOK FOR ME provides a realistic look into the
world of the foster system, which is very sad and disheartening. Gardner’s insight into this
problem is noteworthy.

The next installment in the Evelyn Talbot series is anything
but a beautiful romance story. Once you start reading FACE OFF you realize you are in for the
duration. So scary and unpredictable even if you are fully aware of who the bad guy is and
what he is planning... Brenda Novak wrapped up every horrific trait she could fathom in this
serial monster.
