K. M. Daughters | Real Men Should Read Romance

At the 2008 Romance Writers of America conference, a talented and prolific
author entertained and informed attendees as a luncheon keynote speaker. We
delighted in her anecdote concerning her husband. Relating that he had never
read a single one of her impressive body of published novels, she declared that
she always made a point to kill somebody in each of her books with her
husbandโ€™s first name.

The moral of her story for us is: real men should read romance for their
overall health, oh yes, and enjoyment.

Our contention is not as tongue in cheek as it sounds. Men are, of course, half
the equation in the yin and yang of traditional romance genres. Our heroes
yearn for equal measures of romantic fulfillment and personal happily ever
after conclusions as do our heroines. Sensuality, present in varying degrees in
romance, isnโ€™t as tantalizing and stimulating to theโ€ฆimaginationโ€ฆfor men?

Our virile husbands are delighted (forced) to read our books. In fact one of
our husbands brought our latest release on a men only long weekend in the deep
woods. By day, he and his friends blazed trails on ATVโ€™s, fished and threw
their catches back in the lake, canoed, hiked, and did rugged, outdoorsy real
men things. In the evening he apparently read and finished our romantic
suspense novel, sending home a text message: โ€œJust read a great book. I got a --
--- (slang word for aroused) and I cried. Who could ask for more?โ€

Exactly.

A male reviewer recently rated the first book in our Sullivan Boys romantic
suspense series. (Thank you so much William Potter for five stars). Mr. Potter
remarked, โ€œIf men enjoy mystery as much as women love romance, then Daughters
may have created the best of both worlds. The only problem could arise when it
comes to deciding who reads the next Sullivan Boys novel firstโ€ฆhim or her.โ€

We think all romance genre authors should have the same โ€œproblemโ€. If men love
paranormalโ€ฆ Or inspirational, faith-based themesโ€ฆ Or - foregone conclusion,
eroticaโ€ฆ Yes, our real men and all real men should read romance novels.
Especially to investigate whether or not theyโ€™re symbolically murdered within
the pages.

Re: K. M. Daughters | Real Men Should Read Romance

I agree. Why is it all right for us to read adventure, murder, etc. yet they balk at romance. Especially when there is romance in many of the adventure and murder books they read.

Yes, men should read - then they might know what we need! They'd at least know why we read romance!

I agree fully. My husband has little
time for reading. I have been bringing
books on tape/CD home and sharing
them with my husband for several
years. I read just about everything. I
started passing along books by Lisa
Gardner, Sandra Brown, Julie Garwood,
and Nora Roberts. He has enjoyed
them all. However, he did ask me to
warn him about sex scenes after he
nearly drove off the road on his way
home from work. Men just don't
multi-task well.
(Patricia Barraclough 10:39pm June 16, 2009)

I agree. There are books I would love to share with him.
(Robin McKay 10:46am June 17, 2009)

I completely agree. I wish I could get my husband to read more. I know he would enjoy them more than he would admit.
(Lanae Tatman 1:13pm June 17, 2009)

My husband used to read but doesn't
anymore because it hurts his eyes. I read
enough for the both of us and he lets me
tell him all about the book as soon as I'm
done.
(Bridget Hopper 3:17pm June 17, 2009)

every man should read at least one romance book and then give an honest opinion
