As an author of suspense and romantic suspense, my Internet browser history is a
little…questionable. It’s filled with searches for things like missing persons
reports, how to blow up a car, and matching bullets to weapons. But I’ve been
through so many background checks at this point (for research visits to the FBI,
CIA, military locations, etc.) that I figure if this ever comes up, the FBI
would take one look, see my name and say, “Oh yeah, that’s just for a book.”
But the heroine of my Profiler series,
Evelyn Baine, has a totally different problem. She works for the FBI, and there
are a few things she isn’t sure she wants them to know:
She doesn’t really play by the rules
Oh, she thinks she does. And most of the time, she really tries, because the
FBI’s opinion of her matters a lot. But when the cases get too personal (which
they often do), she’ll throw all the rules out and do whatever it takes to solve
them.
Her people skills could use some work
This one isn’t really a secret, but Evelyn thinks she hides it better than she
does, especially at the beginning of the series. She may be one of the best
profilers they have, but put her in a social situation and she’s at a loss.
She’s always got something to prove
Even before she joined the Behavioral Analysis Unit, Evelyn had profiled a
serial rapist no one else could find. But with every new case, it’s about more
than just getting to the truth – it’s also about proving her worth all over
again. In a law enforcement agency where 81% of the agents are men and 83% are
white, Evelyn stands out and she intends to make sure it’s because of her job
record.
There’s never been any other option for her
When Evelyn was twelve years old, her best friend disappeared and an FBI
profiler tried to find her. Ever since that day, Evelyn was determined to be an
agent – and to find her friend someday.
Her feelings for a fellow agent aren’t exactly professional
Hostage Rescue Team agent Kyle McKenzie has flirted with Evelyn since her very
first day at the BAU, and initially she blew it off as a joke. Lately, though,
things have changed, and choosing a relationship with Kyle is against the rules…
