I’m excited to celebrate the release of my second Highlander romance, THE HIGHLANDER'S ACCIDENTAL MARRIAGE, book six in my Marriage Mart Mayhem series. My first Scottish romance, THE HIGHLANDER'S CHOICE, is also part of this series.

One of the challenges of setting my romance in the Scottish highlands was familiarizing myself with the history, culture and lore of nineteenth century Scotland. I found several interesting sites that contributed to my education and discovered a number of fascinating facts. I’ll share a few of my favorites.

There is a formula for “reading” tartans based on thread count, pivots, warp and weft. Knowing how to read tartan patterns enables you to appreciate the variety of designs and recognize specific combinations.

You have to know Scottish slang and sayings to sound like a Scot. Black as the Earl of Hell’s Waistcoat! is slang for “pitch black.”

Scotland’s history goes back to the Stone Age (10,000 BC). Invasions and occupations over thousands of years have created a rich cultural heritage.

All kilts are not created equal. There is a significant difference between the Feileigh Mor and the Feileadh Beag.

Nineteenth century Scotland is a land of magnificent history, myth and mystery. It was an adventure to “visit” while writing, THE HIGHLANDER'S ACCIDENTAL MARRIAGE. Have you been to Scotland? What fascinates you most?

THE HIGHLANDER'S ACCIDENTAL MARRIAGE

About THE HIGHLANDER'S ACCIDENTAL MARRIAGE

Scotland, 1817 - The Duke of Manchester's sister, Lady Sarah Lacey, always abides by the rules of etiquette. Fate, however, has no such confines. On a journey to the Scottish Highlands, Lady Sarah is set upon by misfortune-leaving her without carriage or chaperone, and left to the mercy of a kind and handsome gentleman. Whom (in order to secure a room at an inn) she announces is her husband.

When she proclaims they're married in public, Professor Braeden McKinnon can't bring himself to correct the lovely Lady Sarah. After all, her reputation would be ruined. Nor can he tell her that her proclamation is not only legally binding in Scotland, but sharing a room is considered to be an act of consummation...

Now they are bound together until death do they part-even if Sarah has no intention of becoming any man's wife.

Re: Callie Hutton | Fascinating Facts about 19th Century Scotland

I found your posting to be most interesting. It was a
bit of a refresher course for me, as well as a
learning experience. Your latest book sounds like
it's going to be a book not to be missed, and I've put
it on my TBR list for my Winter reading!! The cover
is stunning as well!! Congratulations on your latest
book, and I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and
New Year!!

Quite a bit of history in your post. I have been to Scotland
and enjoyed the trip. I went to see "Nessie" but no show that
day. I am adding your book (s) to my TBR list.
