Carly Phillips | Romance

pinterestgoodreadstwitterfacebook

Today is my favorite day of the year. Forget the hype. Forget the sensationalism. Forget the commercialism and the chocolate, the roses and gifts. Valentine’s Day is special to me because it symbolizes what I write about all year. LOVE.

Do you want to know the best thing about LOVE? It’s given freely. It doesn’t cost a penny.

True, LOVE should be earned. And love – true love – the kind that lasts beyond the excitement and rush of dating and all the “firsts” – takes work. The kind of work that is deeply satisfying because in the end, you are with the person who you are destined to spend the rest of your life with.

Am I a romantic? You betcha.

Do I think true love is easy? Nope.

Will the work be simple? Not if you want love to last.

And not all relationships that start out with promise will end the way we hope. But when one door closes, another opens – and the work begins anew.

That’s okay. Because anything worth having shouldn’t come easy. But you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you gave love freely and earned back the same.

And when all else fails, there’s always jewelry, flowers or chocolate!

Carly Phillips is the ultimate romantic – a contemporary romance writer who knows the value of buying her own gifts so she can never be mad at her husband for forgetting. She’s a sucker for a happy ending and loves writing her own. Lucky Charm (10/08); Secret Fantasy reissue (1/09). Carly lives in Purchase, NY with husband, two teenage daughters and her two crazy wheaten terriers who act like their third and fourth child. Visit www.carlyphillips.com/ for all things Carly!

Re: Carly Phillips | Romance

True Love. I believe in it. And I agree, you still have to work at it. What a great post!

Great post, Carly. I have my own HEA ending, and I love reading them in your wonderful books!
(Cheryl Castings 12:52pm February 14, 2009)

Hi Carly, thanks for sharing your thoughts on love. I think you've got it right, and like reading romances it's always good to have a reminder of what is important and how to nurture it.

Happy Valentine's Day to one all.

I am going to babysit my 3 mo old granddaughter as her parents go out to lunch, then hubby and I will go out for a bite for dinner.

Enjoy.

Everything that you say is so true, Carly.
I am going to start with the buying my own gifts. That is a great idea.
Happy Valentine's Day.

Great blog - love your books. Happy Valentine's Day.
(Karen Barnett 11:48am February 14, 2009)

From your books, Carly, I'm not
surprised that you are a hopeless
romantic. You have that air about you!

I usually buy my gifts and tell my
hubby what he got me. But I never
thought about buying my own gifts so
that I'm not mad at my husband for
forgetting. That's quite a different
take on being mad because he forgot,
so you've got to get your own. What a
positive concept!

I agree that love is not easy. Everyday pressures can be very overwhelming. It pays to remember the little reasons why you fell in love to begin with.
(LuAnn Morgan 1:48pm February 14, 2009)

The longer you have a true love, the stronger it gets. I still remember the first rush of youthful passion, but it can't hold a candle to the powerful feelings that many years with the same hero brings to my heart. I guess I can't understand why so many couples today are reluctant to commit (legally) to a relationship. I truly love the fact that we "belong to each other"....

Love the family dynamics you write so well, and the HEAs.

Happy Valentine's to all.
(Betty Cox 2:14pm February 14, 2009)

Happy Valentine"s Day to everyone!
(JoAnn White 5:08pm February 14, 2009)

Yes, love isn't always the easy or the "normal" way. Sometimes it is giving the same Valentine to each other & over again with the "new" year date just because it says all the right things. And, it makes you laugh, heartstrings & all!
(Jean Merriott 9:30pm February 14, 2009)

Carly, you are right love ain't always easy but with the right person it is all worth while. I say this after 44 years of marriage. By the way I just finished reading Hot Property and loved it.
(Judy Anderson 10:02pm February 14, 2009)

Yes, I tend to buy my own gifts, as does
my husband. Not all the time, but the
older we get, the less we need, so we get
what we need/want after telling each
other "guess what you're getting me."
(Patricia Barraclough 10:12pm February 14, 2009)

Great post! Happy Valentine's Day
(Amy Smith 10:19pm February 14, 2009)

...when all else fails, there are really good books :D
(Summer Sharp 4:38pm February 15, 2009)

Hi Carly,
I didn't know you were blogging here yesterday or I would have stopped by!
True love has passed me by but I believe in it. You are so right that it takes a lot of work, but it so worthwhile. Both people in the relationship have to want to do the work and believe in love.
As someone said, there are always books!!
See you at The Plotmonkeys!
(Donna McClure 8:00pm February 15, 2009)

Love is a commitment! And it is worth it over the long haul. Thanks for all the positive thoughts!
