Emma Hamm | For everyone who thought the Corpse Bride should have gotten the man

What is the title of your latest release?
THE DEATHLESS ONE

What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
For everyone who thought the Corpse Bride should have gotten the man… or for people who love Shadow Daddies.

How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I’ve always wanted to write in a gritty, almost steampunk world but with people who were more ahead of their times than Victorian. Women in pants, guns existing, the kind of place where there’s an infinite number of options available.

Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
I’d love to hang out with Jessamine, but it would be a little odd considering she’s a dead girl. Still fun, but also, I would have concerns about the smell.

What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Feminine rage spreader

What’s something you learned while writing this book?
Writing a book is always a trial in learning who these new characters are. I really thought I’d go in with a MMC who is the usual alpha hero. Instead, I got to fall in love with a very unusual male main character who has a lot of trauma to work through. It was a joy to write the Deathless One as he is.

Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I wait until I’m totally done! Otherwise, the book would never get written.

What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Very expensive sushi

Describe your writing space/office!
I’m usually on the couch these days! We just recently got a puppy who is a velcro dog, so I can’t write at my desk, or she gets upset.

Who is an author you admire?
Clive Barker has always been my favorite. The Abarat is one of my favorite books growing up.

Is there a book that changed your life?
House of Leaves - it’ll mess you up

Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
It was such a wild call! Of course, I’ve published a lot of books before that (nearly 50 now) but there’s nothing like having a team of people ready to promote your book with you.

What’s your favorite genre to read?
Romance! Anything romance.

What’s your favorite movie?
Lord of the Rings, specifically Two Towers. But when I’m sick, I always put Austenland on.

What is your favorite season?
Fall! It’s so pretty.

How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
Working most likely XD But a perfect birthday would be good food with my favorite people.

What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
KPop Demon Hunters.

What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Japanese food or Korean food

What do you do when you have free time?
I usually watch a lot of movies, read a lot of books, and build Legos.

What can readers expect from you next?
THE HEARTLESS ONE comes out in March! And, of course, I’ve got some troll books coming out soon for my monster loving readers.

THE DEATHLESS ONE by Emma Hamm

A princess murdered at the altar makes a deal with the god of death for vengeance and to save her people in this first in a unique romantasy trilogy from USA TODAY bestselling author Emma Hamm.

Jessamine was raised to be a leader for her people, but when the land is overrun by an incurable plague, she must enter a political marriage to save them all. A union that should have brought hope only brings death as her new husband murders her at the wedding altar and seizes the throne.

But her death is just the beginning. Her spirit is met by the Deathless One, a god of death yearning to return to the mortal plane, and he needs her help. The two of them make a deal—her life and the return of her kingdom in exchange for his resurrection. But the Deathless One is a known trickster, and a deal with him is one made in blood.

Jessamine knows the Deathless One is a dangerous ally, but the longer they work together, the more she wants him and the less she can stay away. As their connection deepens, soon she wonders if she even wants this contract to end. Perhaps the more appealing throne is the one by his side, but she’d have to turn her back on her people to get it.
