Hi, I’m Jamie Adams, and if you’ve been following along, you already know I love a good mystery. Whether it’s a twisty whodunit, a classic cozy, or a suspenseful thriller, I’m always intrigued by what keeps a sleuth going—and who’s by their side.
One of the most delightful parts of a great mystery isn’t just the main character—it’s the sidekick. These loyal companions come in all shapes and sizes: some walk on two legs, some on four, but they all help add depth, humor, and heart to a story. Today, I’m diving into one of the most fun questions in the cozy mystery world:
Favorite sleuth sidekick: Cat, Dog, or Best Friend?

The Clever Cat
From aloof observers to uncanny clue-finders, cats are a popular pick in the cozy mystery genre. They seem to always be in the right place at the right time—often finding things their human companions overlook. Whether they’re knocking something off a shelf that turns out to be a clue or curling up next to the prime suspect, cats bring just the right amount of mischief and mystery.
Why we love them:
- Mysterious by nature
- Great comic relief (especially when they ignore their human's pleas)
- They know something... and they’re not telling.
I you love feline detective stories, don’t miss the A Mobile Cat Groomer Mystery series by Ruth J. Hartman. It’s full of whiskers, wit, and whisker-twitching clues.

The Loyal Dog
Dogs bring heart to a mystery. Often fiercely loyal and protective, they’re not just companions—they're sometimes heroes. Whether they’re sniffing out danger, alerting the sleuth to something suspicious, or simply offering comfort after a rough day of crime-solving, dogs make every scene feel warmer (and sometimes a little goofier).
Why we love them:
- Unwavering loyalty
- Excellent at sniffing out clues (literally!)
- Always ready to defend their human
Check out the Northwoods Mysteries by Annie McEwen. With a charming small-town setting and a lovable dog companion, these stories are packed with heart and suspense.
Best Friend
Every great sleuth needs someone to bounce ideas off of—and sometimes, to drag into danger with them. Best friends in mysteries often bring humor, heart, and a healthy dose of skepticism. They might be the practical voice of reason or the one suggesting an undercover sting operation at midnight. Either way, they’re a crucial part of the team.
Why we love them:
- Built-in banter
- Emotional support through thick and thin
- They (and its secrets), sometimes even better than the sleuth
Want some fun, family-based sleuthing? You’ll love the Cousins Cozy Mysteries by Beth Hamer Miles. These cousins team up to solve crimes with wit, warmth, and just the right amount of sass.

So…Who’s Your Favorite?
As a mystery lover (and writer), I enjoy all three. I’ve read (and written) stories featuring each type of sidekick, and they all bring something special to the page. But I want to hear from you.
Do you prefer your sleuths to be accompanied by a cat, a dog, or a clever best friend? Maybe you love a combo of all three! Let me know in the comments—I’d love to hear who your favorite sidekicks are and what makes them unforgettable.
Happy sleuthing,
Jamie
Jamie L. Adams fell in love with books at an early age. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott opened her imagination and sparked a dream to be a writer. She wrote her first book as a school project in 6th grade. Living in the Ozarks with her husband, twin daughters, and a herd of cats, she spends most of her free writing, reading, or learning more about the craft near to her heart.
