Just the other day someone asked me how I come up with all my stories. The answer is they pop out of my head all the time, and I can’t stop them! I have ideas for so many different series I’ll probably never get to writing all of them. Ironically, the idea for the FBI Strike Force romantic suspense series began stewing around in my head in the late 90s, long before I was a published author. Here’s how it all began…
Decades ago, my then-boyfriend and I were sitting on the beach in North Carolina with our beach reads, and I couldn’t finish the book I was reading. It’s very unusual for me to DNF a book, but this one just didn’t hold my interest. My boyfriend, Ned (aka Ned-the-Fed), said to me: Tee, you’re a good writer, and you have great story ideas. Why don’t you write your own book? So later that day, back on the beach but with margaritas this time, we started brainstorming on my very first book, a romantic suspense about an FBI agent. I wrote it, submitted it to literary agents and publishers all across our great nation, who politely rejected it. Years passed, and it was suggested to me that I put that story aside and write something else. That “something else” became the published NYPD Blue & Gold series, Federal K-9 series, and K-9 Special Ops series. Stay with me and jump ahead twenty years or so from the beach to present day…
I couldn’t let go of my ideas for an FBI series about a team of hunky, heroic blood brothers falling in love whilst fighting organized crime families threatening to take over the Big Apple. Rather than return to that beach idea that got me nowhere, I wrote a brand-new book for the first installment of the series - PERFECT VENGEANCE. Special Agent Jack Gates is the hero of this story, and he’s forced to partner up with Gina Perot, a snarky, adventurous heroine who will, naturally, capture Jack’s heart. That is, after their snarky meet-cute in chapter 1. I truly believe this is my best meet-cute yet!
Book 2 of the series - EXACTING VENGEANCE - will feature Jack’s brother, Kyle. And yep, you guessed it – Kyle was the hero of my heretofore never published beach book from twenty years ago. You’ll meet Jack, Kyle, and their younger brother, Deke, in PERFECT VENGEANCE. I also have plans for a fourth book in this series about Lance, the brother whose work is so clandestine no one ever knows where in the world he is at any given time or what agency he actually works for. I haven’t even decided that yet myself!
Here's a little teaser excerpt from PERFECT VENGEANCE to whet your appetite:
“Don’t take this personally,” he said as he completed his pat down. “I search all my prisoners before cuffing them.”
She whipped around and slammed into a wall of muscle. More specifically, Gates’s hard, pectorally perfect chest. He gripped her upper arms until she regained her balance. She pushed at him, spreading her fingers wide, but he held fast. God, but the man really did have the most incredible body. All those rippling, flexing muscles.
He gave her that half-assed smile again. “Now who’s copping a feel?”
“Oooh,” she gritted out and shoved again at his chest.
“Knock yourself out, honey.”
“Let me go,” she snapped.
He did. Abruptly.
The back of her head whacked against the wall as she stumbled. A jolt of pain exploded in her skull. For a second, she saw stars, but no way would she go down, not in front of the most overbearing, pig-headed—
Regaining her balance, she planted her hands on her hips and faced him head-on, though she had to crane her neck to accomplish that.
The corners of his mouth lifted again. “When I said ‘knock yourself out’ I didn’t mean literally.”
She rubbed the back of her head and prayed he’d just arrest her and get it over with before humiliating her further. The memory of her body’s involuntary reaction to his hand on her breast while they’d been stuck in the closet washed over her like a heat wave, and her face flushed. “Bastard.”
“You have no idea.” He crossed his arms, hiking up his sleeve to reveal more of his cast. Then he smiled—broader, this time—and darned if it didn’t transform his face, softening all those hard planes and angles, making him appear younger than she’d originally thought. Maybe in his mid to late-thirties. Under any other circumstances, she’d have to admit the man was not only handsome, he was downright gorgeous.
Don’t judge this book by its cover. Gates was no cover model. He was a gun-toting, badge-carrying, handcuff-wielding FBI agent who was about to throw her smartass mouth in jail. Before the night was over, she’d be cuffed to a chair and put under interrogation lights until she gave up her friends. He probably already knew who her friends were. Like Annabelle said… The FBI knows everything.
