Book Title: MARRYING THE MIDWIFE, Book 10, Below the Salt Series
Character Name: Maggie Whitlock
How would you describe your family or your childhood?
My name is Maggie Whitlock. My childhood was normal, but my life has changed drastically since I birthed my daughter.
What was your greatest talent
I learned the skills of being a midwife from my mother. I used to work at her side.
Significant other?
I was married young to a man named George. He died before my daughter was even born.
Biggest challenge in relationships?
I don’t have a lot of experience with romantic relationships. Although, since meeting Lord Evan Blake, I feel as if his presence has ignited something in me that has been dormant for many years. I find it hard to trust nobles, so I am not sure we belong together.
Where do you live?
I don’t stay in one place long. Sir Evan offered me a job at Saltwood Castle in Hythe taking care of his pregnant cousin. I live here for now with my daughter and younger brother too, thanks to the kind lord.
Do you have any enemies?
Yes. There is a noble family who blames the death of a noblewoman and her baby on my mother. They executed my mother and even after all these years they are trying to find me to kill me as well.
How do you feel about the place where you are now? Is there something you are particularly attached to, or particularly repelled by, in this place?
I used to live in a home made from wattle and daub in a town. Living at the castle is like a dream come true. I don’t like the stuffiness of some of the nobles, but I have to say I am attached to Lord Evan. He can seem arrogant at times, but he’s reached out to help me. I see that even under his tough exterior, he has a kind and loving heart.
Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?
Yes, I have a daughter, Emma who is four years old. I have watched over my younger brother, Charles since we had to flee our hometown. He is thirteen now.
What do you do for a living?
I am a midwife.
Greatest disappointment?
That I lost my parents so early in life. Especially my mother. I wish she was here so I could talk to her about my feelings for Sir Evan.
Greatest source of joy?
My daughter. Even with all the darkness and sadness in my life, she brings me so much happiness and joy.
What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?
There really hasn’t been a lot of time for me to have fun, since I’ve been raising my daughter and brother and keeping us alive by staying on the run. However, spending time with Sir Evan, and just watching him on the jousting field has been entertaining, I must say.
What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?
Not being able to save my mother, and leaving her when she needed me the most.
What keeps you awake at night?
The thought that I might be executed and blamed for the loss of the noblewoman and her baby. But that doesn’t frighten me half as much as what would happen to my daughter and brother if I wasn’t here to protect them.
What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?
I know I shouldn’t stay in one place too long, but I really like it here at the castle and being with Sir Evan. All my needs are met here. I feel safe and secure for the first time in many years. But I haven’t been honest with him, and have not told him I am on the run.
Is there something that you need or want that you don’t have? For yourself or for someone important to you?
Yes. I would like safety and security for my family. Even if we are poor, it doesn’t matter. I just need to know they will be taken care of if something happens to me. And honestly, I would like to experience being in love and having a man who will accept me for who I am and do everything in his power to keep me and my family safe and put us first.
Why don’t you have it? What is in the way?
I hate to admit that I am afraid. I haven’t told Sir Evan my backstory. If he knew I was partly responsible for a noblewoman and her baby dying because my mother helped me birth my baby instead, Sir Evan might judge me, hate me, or order me executed for not putting a noble and their needs first.
Below the Salt #10

A midwife on the run finds safety in the arms of a handsome knight.
The Midwife:
For four years Maggie Whitlock has been on the run with her brother and young daughter, moving from town to town and never staying in one place long. After her midwife mother was blamed for the death of a noblewoman and her baby, she was executed. Now those same nobles are coming for Maggie!
Maggie acts as mother, provider and protector to her brother and daughter, but beneath her tough exterior she is laden with guilt. She can't help but think she is to blame for the loss of her mother, since she birthed her own baby that night and took her mother's attention away from the noble. When she and her family wander into Saltwood Castle during a knighting, they are broke, hungry and tired. In a weak moment she accepts help from a knight, and even though she despises nobles she finds herself oddly attracted to Sir Evan Blackmore.
The Knight:
Sir Evan Blackmore has been newly knighted and couldn't be happier. During the celebration, the castle courtyard is crowded and he accidentally knocks a little girl to the ground. He meets Maggie, the girl's mother, and finds out Maggie is a widow and also a midwife. He's taken vows as a knight to help orphans and widows and decides this is the first step to prove he is an honorable knight and has truly earned the title of Sir.
He hires Maggie to tend to his pregnant cousin, offering to give Maggie not only a job but also food and a home for her family. So why doesn't she seem eager to accept his offer? As Evan watches this strong, brave girl live through her struggles, he loses his heart to her. But Maggie is keeping secrets which he soon discovers when her past comes back to haunt her and he is dragged into a whirlwind situation that threatens more lives than just one.
Can a woman on the run stop longing enough to face her true feelings for a knight although she despises nobles and swore she would never trust them again?
Love has no bounds but marriage has rules. A noble must never wed anyone from below the salt.
