1--What is the title of your latest release?
Soul of the Stone
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
Texas, a slayer who’s faster, stronger, and ready to take down evil bloodsuckers is facing her toughest battle yet in the thrilling sequel to Sign of the Slayer. As vampire treachery rises and the weight of responsibility grows, Texas is haunted by mysterious voices and betrayed by those she trusted most. Now, the greatest threat to humanity is alive, and the only person who can help her is the one she’s falling for – again - the same vampire who broke her heart. Saving the world might require following him into the underworld, but will her soul survive the journey?
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
When I decided my vampires would do alchemy and I researched its origins I knew I had to visit Egypt so I can describe the setting just right.
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
No, because she’s a vampire magnet. But personality wise, yes!
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Strong, snarky, sensational
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
The history of Alchemy and learned more about Alexander the Great.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I wait until I am totally done. I find that it inhibits my creative process when I edit as I go because I know there’s a better way to phrase something.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Ramen—both the instant noodles and restaurant quality.
9--Describe your writing space/office!
I have two laptops and a huge, curved monitor. There’s a graveyard of candles on my desk. Hanging on my walls is my vision board and blown-up canvas pictures of my first book series, which was a gift from my husband.
10--Who is an author you admire?
Brenda Jackson was one of the first authors who made me fall in love with books. I could see myself in her books and her writing just…flows, you know? It’s beautiful and elegant. I also love Kristin Higgins. I love her characters, and the town and people are so charming. I had the opportunity to meet both of my faves and they are so kind in person.
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice kicked off my love affair with vampires.
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
Full circle moment—my editor, now agent Tara Gelsomino called me on my way to work and told me how much she loved my first book which is Fool for You under the pen name Rina Gray. I was so excited I nearly drove into a ditch. It was so wonderful and made me feel validated as a writer. Fast forward years later, she is now my agent. She can’t get rid of me just yet.
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
Romance
14--What’s your favorite movie?
Tie between The Five Heartbeats and Lord of the Rings. They are two completely different movies one is the fictional rise and fall of a R&B soul group and the other is about the journey of a hobbit to save the world from evil, but both are epics and I love an epic!
15--What is your favorite season?
Fall. Love the colors, fashions, and scents.
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
With family and friends at a restaurant or a small intimate party at my house.
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
Podcast is The Read with Kid Fury and Crissle. It’s a hop-hop and pop culture podcast and I’m always laughing with those two.
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Japanese and Jamaican.
19--What do you do when you have free time?
I’m reading a book or watching a K-Drama.
20--What can readers expect from you next?
The third installment in this series and a women’s fiction book with magical realism.
American Slayer Society #2
Slay like no one is watching…in the jaw-dropping, vamp-enemies-to-lovers sequel to Sign of the Slayer
There are things I love about being a slayer. Being faster and stronger than everyone else? Love it. Taking down a bunch of evil bloodsuckers before they feed on the innocent? That’s my vibe. Working with the American Slayer Society and creating weapons out of thin air? Here for all of it.
But there are some things I didn’t sign up for, and they’re becoming increasingly harder to deal with. People making my life miserable, vampire treachery, heavy-as-all-hell responsibilities I didn’t ask for…all the pressure is growing. Exponentially.
I didn’t ask for any of it. Not the black-out rage that’s consuming my closest relationships. Not the lies fed to me by those I trusted—and even my own family. And definitely not the voices from the stone that follow me wherever I go. Guiding me. Taunting me. Haunting me.
Because there’s big work to do, and the greatest—and oldest—threat to humanity is now alive, kicking, and thirsty as hell. None of us are safe. And the only person who can help me is the one whose kiss can ignite my soul…or shatter it to a thousand slayer pieces.
Catching feelings is one thing. But following him into the underworld to save the world?
That’s an even more terrifying problem.
