Olesya Salnikova Gilmore Author-Reader Match: THE HAUNTING OF MOSCOW HOUSE

Instagramgoodreadsfacebooktwitterpinterest

Instead of trying to find your perfect match in a dating app, we bring you the “Author-Reader Match" where we introduce you to authors you may fall in love with. It's our great pleasure to present Olesya Salnikova Gilmore!

Writes:

Speculative historical fiction inspired by Eastern European history and folklore. I love to blend the supernatural with the real to create largely true-to-life stories that reflect my Russian heritage and have a dash of the magical or the ghostly, sometimes both. THE HAUNTING OF MOSCOW HOUSE is a gothic horror tale set in post-revolutionary Moscow, in which two formerly aristocratic sisters race to uncover their family’s long-buried secrets in a house now haunted by a past dangerous—and deadly—to remember.

About:

I am a mama/wife/author/ex-lawyer living in deep suburbia but dreaming about exotic locales where I like to set my books and make my characters mostly miserable. I love: last minute travel to places I had no idea I wanted to go to; taking walks along the lake while my toddler daughter speeds by on her scooter, screaming for mommy to run; all the art projects with my daughter, though I get major OCD with some of her more chaotic artistic choices; concerts, theatres, opera, anything musical or remotely performance artsy; paintings, the more ancient and more obscure the better; watching period dramas even if really terrible and cheesy and historically inaccurate; reading about ghosts and romantically gothic castles, witches who are misunderstood and maligned, vampires and pirates and queens, Tudors and Stuarts and Romanovs, thrillers and classics of all stripes. If it’s dark, and it’s fiction, I want it.

I’m looking for readers who love:

  • Ghost stories, haunted houses, dark and/or scary fiction of any variety
  • Semi-recent history, at least as background
  • Learning something new
  • Family secrets
  • Found family
  • Sisterhood and all its ups and downs
  • Coming of age
  • Swoon-worthy romance that turns up the heat
  • Hot Russian and American men
  • Atmosphere for days
  • Exotic settings
  • Russian Revolution/Russian aristocracy/early Soviet era
  • Slavic folklore
  • The real world with a touch of magic or supernatural to it
  • Female-centric stories of survival

What to expect if we're compatible:

  • Big stories with big issues and big feels
  • Characters who don’t always make the right decisions, but always try to do the right thing
  • Settings you’ll practically see, smell, touch, and feel
  • Supernatural, dark/gothic, and romantic elements
  • Immersive books that will enable you to forget the world around you
  • Always learning something new, either about history, folklore, a different culture or place or time, and so on
  • An occasional newsletter you can subscribe to that will bring you the latest news about me and my books
  • A monthly historical fiction chat you can check out that I organize (and personally am online and involved in) with fellow historical fiction authors during which we talk about writing, as well as our favorite books and authors
  • Giveaways, local events, and other fun stuff on socials, as well as a personal touch with my readers and fans

THE HAUNTING OF MOSCOW HOUSE by Olesya Salnikova Gilmore

The Haunting of Moscow House

In this elegant gothic horror tale set in post-revolutionary Russia, two formerly aristocratic sisters race to uncover their family’s long-buried secrets in a house haunted by a past dangerous—and deadly—to remember.

It is the summer of 1921, and a group of Bolsheviks have taken over Irina and Lili Goliteva’s ancestral home in Moscow, a stately mansion falling into disrepair and decay. The remaining members of their family are ordered to move into the cramped attic, while the officials take over an entire wing of grand rooms downstairs. The sisters understand it is the way of things and know they must forget their noble upbringing to make their way in this new Soviet Russia. But the house begins to whisper of a traumatic past not as dead as they thought.

Eager to escape it and their unwelcome new landlords, Irina and Lili find jobs with the recently arrived American Relief Administration, meant to ease the post-revolutionary famine in Russia. For the sisters, the ARA provides much-needed food and employment, as well as a chance for sensible Irina to help those less fortunate and artistic Lili to express herself for a good cause. It might just lead them to love, too.

But at home, the spirits of their deceased family awaken, desperate to impart what really happened to them during the Revolution. Soon one of the officials living in the house is found dead. Was his death caused by something supernatural, or by someone all too human? And are Irina and Lili and their family next? Only unearthing the frightening secrets of Moscow House will reveal all. But this means the sisters must dig deep into a past no one in Russia except the dead are allowed to remember.
