1--What is the title of your latest release?

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

A portrait artist with a macabre past and her dashing inquiry agent husband are forced to confront long-buried family secrets that threaten to unravel their lives.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I have wanted to set a book in Cornwall for some time. It’s such a beautiful and atmospheric place. And I’ve been hinting for some time about Lord Gage’s maternal relatives being smugglers and rogues. This was the perfect time to take my characters to the southwestern tip of England to confront Lord Gage’s past.

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Definitely. Kiera sees the world in a different way than most people, so her perspective would always be fresh.

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Artistic, observant, loyal.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

A droll teller was a type of traveling minstrel that once roamed the Cornish countryside sharing tales and legends and singing ballads.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I write a complete first draft before doing any editing.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Lemon cake. Or cake of any kind really.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

The walls are painted a soft watery blue-green and some of my favorite paintings and maps grace the walls. There is a large window across one wall letting in lots of natural light and double glass-fronted French doors in the center of on another. A third wall is covered in tall bookshelves overflowing with books, pictures, and various knick-knacks. My desk sits in the middle of the room, and a comfy teal blue chair graces one corner, where I love to sit and edit by hand.

10--Who is an author you admire?

Mary Stewart. She is an absolute master and I adore all her books.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

The Bluebeard Room by Carolyn Keene. I won it as a White Elephant gift at a church picnic at the age of about nine, and from that moment on I began to inhale every mystery I could get my hands on.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

Gosh! It’s been thirteen years now, which is hard to believe. I’m quite certain I was very giddy and emotional at having accomplished a dream after working so hard and so long for it.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Historical mysteries with strong romantic elements. I also love Gothics.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

It’s a tie between Inception and 1917.

15--What is your favorite season?

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Good food, family, friends, and a pleasant outing.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

The Burning of Rosemont Abbey by Naomi Stephens.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

19--What do you do when you have free time?

Read, sing, travel.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

THE COLD LIGHT OF DAY, Verity Kent Book 7, releases on September 24, 2024.

A Deceptive Composition

Lady Kiera Darby and her dashing husband, Sebastian Gage, hope they’ve finally found peace after a tumultuous summer, but long-buried family secrets soon threaten to unravel their lives . . .

October 1832. Kiera is enjoying the slower pace of the English countryside. She, Sebastian, and their infant daughter have accompanied her father-in-law, Lord Gage, home so that he can recuperate from the injuries he sustained in a foiled attempt on his life. But as the chill of autumn sweeps across the land, they receive a summons from an unexpected quarter. Lord Gage’s estranged uncle—a member of the notorious Roscarrock family—has been murdered, and his family is desperate for answers. Despite Lord Gage’s protests, Kiera and Sebastian press on to Cornwall to assist.

It isn’t long before they discover that almost nothing is as it seems among the Roscarrocks, and they’ve been lured to their isolated cove under false pretenses. There are whispers of a lost treasure and frightening allusions to a series of murders stretching back decades that touch the lives of the family personally. Kiera and Sebastian are left with no choice but to uncover the truth before the secrets of the past threaten to destroy them all.
