1--What is the title of your latest release?

TAKE TWO, BIRDIE MAXWELL

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

America’s Sweetheart gets canceled and retreats to her childhood hometown and discovers an anonymous love letter sent from one of her exes, then decides to stage her own real life romcom to discover who wrote it and win back the adoration of the public!

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

Once I knew that it was going to be a road trip book, California – my home state – made the most sense. It’s such a huge stretch of land that they could log a lot of miles without even crossing a state border!

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Absolutely! I adore Birdie. I think if you’re writing a romcom heroine, the first rule has to be that you want to be their friend!

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Plucky, ambitious, determined

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Probably that road-tripping in an RV is not for me. I did it once with my family in middle school, and this was a reminder that I’m a plane-travel girl.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I tend to edit every 50 pages. Partially because I need a reminder of what I’ve done with my characters, so not only do I tighten up the work but it helps me figure out if I’m about to make a plot mistake because I’ve forgotten something!

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

I’m a dessert and bread girl. If I could eat just that for every meal of my life, I’d be totally fine.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I write from my home office, which is stacked with books from friends. I do have a desk in there but tend to write on the white couch, with one of the dogs on one side and me on the other.

10--Who is an author you admire?

Right now, I am in awe of authors who have written something totally revelatory that would just never cross my mind. Books like Shark Heart by Emily Habeck and Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt truly just blew me away.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

Yes, although not maybe in the way this question is intended! When I was first starting out, I wrote a manuscript and sent it to a friend who was an editor. She thought my writing was good but my storytelling and plotting weren’t, so she suggested I read Good Grief by Lolly Winston as an example of what she thought I was capable of if I really studied the craft. Not only did I adore the book, but it 100% made me see where I was going wrong, as well as how to start to correct it. I don’t think I would have been able to write any of my books without that guidance.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

Oh my gosh, I’m having a hard time remembering! It was a looooong time ago, lol. But I do remember when I got the call that my second book hit the New York Times bestseller list. I was on the Precor Elliptical at home, which I had hopped on to distract myself, and my editor called to share the news.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

I tend to really like all genres. The most important thing for me is voice and writing – if I connect with the voice and think the writing is strong, I’ll read just about anything.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

Oh, I can’t answer that! Because my book is about a celebrity romance, however, I’ll say that my favorite romcom is probably Notting Hill.

15--What is your favorite season?

Spring!

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I honestly don’t! I tend to really get uncomfortable being the center of attention, so I prefer to just have a quiet day. Maybe a massage?

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

If you haven’t seen Ghosts UK, you must!

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Italian

19--What do you do when you have free time?

Honestly, I’m obsessed with the NY Times Games app, and if I could just spend my entire day doing every puzzle on there, I’d be perfectly happy!

20--What can readers expect from you next?

I have a book out likely in the fall of 2025! We haven’t yet announced it but I’m about 2/3 the way through and am very excited to talk about it soon!

TAKE TWO, BIRDIE MAXWELL by Allison Winn Scotch

Take Two, Birdie Maxwell

Hollywood’s biggest rom-com star tries to recover from her damaged reputation by staging her own rom-com and following a lead on a lost love in the new romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Allison Winn Scotch.

Birdie Robinson thought she’d gotten everything she wanted out of life: fame, adoration, and an A-list Hollywood career. But after an on-set feud goes viral, she leaves L.A. for the one place where no one would think to find her: her hometown. She’s startled to stumble upon a love letter from a former boyfriend asking for a second chance. And there’s just one issue: the letter was unsigned and she’s not sure which ex sent it. Still, a public reunion with an ex-boyfriend could turn the wave of public opinion back in her favor. Life imitating art. What could go wrong?

Elliot O’Brien, star reporter, knows that life isn’t an actual rom-com. Case in point, he’s spent two decades repressing his long-simmering feelings for his twin sister’s best friend, Birdie. But with his journalism career cratering and Birdie back in their hometown at the same time he is, he realizes that chronicling her search for her long-ago ex may be his opportunity to right some wrongs.

As they hit the road in an ancient RV, Birdie and Elliot retrace her romantic history for clues to who wrote the letter and come face to face with their own romantic missteps, all while grappling with whether happy endings are found only on the big screen—or whether their own happier ever after could be closer than they both ever imagined.
