What is the title of your latest release?

The title of my latest novel is SEX, LIES, AND SENSIBILITY. Yeah, it's as juicy as it sounds.

What’s the elevator pitch for your new book?

Imagine the shock of discovering you're the secret offspring of your late father at his will reading. That's Nora's reality in SEX, LIES, AND SENSIBILITY. Her life is a whirlwind of scandal and a crumbling reputation, and her only inheritance is a dilapidated inn in rural Maine, which she must share with her free-spirited sister. This book is more than a story; it's a humorous yet poignant journey of two sisters learning to run an inn with zero experience, facing unexpected challenges, and discovering themselves in the process.

How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

The setting was crucial for creating the right atmosphere. I wanted a location that would take my characters, especially my urban, sophisticated Black protagonists, out of their comfort zone. The remote, rustic backdrop of Maine provides the perfect contrast to their previous lives.  Think Schitt's Creek vibes meets Insecure. Rural Maine is the perfect spot for some 'what the heck am I doing here?' drama.

Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

While Nora might be a bit too high-strung for my personal taste, her sister Yanne is a different story. She's my kind of people. Zero Fs given.

What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Nora is thoughtful, practical, and somewhat repressed. She's a character who embodies the struggles of balancing personal desires with societal expectations.

What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Working with the Wabenaki Confederation for research was an eye-opening experience. It was not just about gathering information but also about understanding and respecting a culture different from my own. This process deeply enriched the narrative and added layers of authenticity to the story.

Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

My approach to writing is very much about getting the story out first. I need to tell it to myself let it unfold organically before I even think about editing. It's like, first I’m telling myself a bedtime story, then fixing it when I'm awake enough to see the plot holes.

What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

There's nothing quite like a well-made Thai curry. The combination of heat, flavor, and aroma is just unbeatable. It's my go-to comfort food and a surefire way to perk up any ordinary day.

Describe your writing space/office!

My writing space is a reflection of my process – a little chaotic but full of creative energy. It's a hot mess of half-finished drinks. Coffee, water, tea – it's like a beverage graveyard where my ideas come to life.

Who is an author you admire?

I deeply admire Kennedy Ryan for her ability to cultivate a loyal and passionate fanbase. Jodi Picoult is another author I look up to, not just for her incredible storytelling skills but also for her generosity and kindness within the literary community.

Is there a book that changed your life?

Alice Walker's The Color Purple was a game-changer for me. It's a powerful, moving story that opened my eyes to the strength and resilience of women, and it has deeply influenced my own writing.

Tell us about when you got the call.

The moment I found out my book was going to be published, I was in a state of stunned silence. Then, as it sank in, I couldn't contain my excitement. I remember calling my agent and just screaming with joy – it was a dream come true.

What’s your favorite genre to read?

I'm drawn to romance for its emotional depth and experimental fiction for its innovative storytelling techniques. Both genres offer unique ways to explore human experiences and emotions.

What’s your favorite movie?

Happiness is a film that has always resonated with me. It's a brilliant blend of dark humor and poignant moments, and it's a movie that has stayed with me over the years.

What is your favorite season?

Fall is my absolute favorite season. There's something magical about the changing leaves, the crisp air, and the sense of transformation that it brings. It's like nature's way of showing off.

How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

The best birthday for me is one where I don't have to work. It's a day to relax, reflect, and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I've been hooked on the Normal Gossip podcast. It's a perfect blend of intrigue, humor, and everyday drama. It's an absolute must-listen for anyone who enjoys a good story.

What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Mediterranean cuisine, with its emphasis on fresh ingredients, vibrant flavors, and healthy dishes, is my go-to choice. It's food that not only tastes good but makes you feel good.

What do you do when you have free time?

Ha!

What can readers expect from you next?

Readers can look forward to a tantalizing, sexy murder mystery next. It's a thrilling new direction for me, with a character from PRIDE AND PROTEST stepping into the spotlight. Expect suspense, intrigue, and, of course, a touch of romance.

SEX, LIES AND SENSIBILITY by Nikki Payne

Sex, Lies and Sensibility

Two sisters roll up their sleeves to run a dilapidated, beach town inn but must learn to work with the locals in this deliciously spicy Sense and Sensibility inspired rom-com by Nikki Payne.

There’s never a good time to learn you’re your father’s secret second family—especially not at the reading of the will. To add insult to injury, Nora’s racy leaked videos just went viral. Nora Dash has got no reputation, no dad, and only a forgotten beach house in rural Maine to her name.  There are no other Black people for miles, the place is abandoned, but at least no one will recognize her O face in the backwoods. She and her free-spirited sister Yanne haven’t even knocked the traveling dust off last season’s designer boots when the first problem pops up: a fake park ranger giving tours of their property like it’s his own—and he’s hotter than the local lobster boil.

Ennis “Bear” Freeman is used to people showing up unannounced on his land. So when a beautiful city girl shows up with the deed to his unofficial headquarters in one manicured hand, he gives it a week before their whole crew packs up and leaves. But it isn’t long before they find out they work better together than apart. To his surprise, Nora’s damned good for Bear’s business, and his own secrets might turn out to be the thing that sends them packing.
