1--What is the title of your latest release?

NORTHWOODS

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Northwoods is a contemporary mystery/thriller set in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.  It follows a mother-son law enforcement team as they race to catch a killer, only to find themselves drawn into a conspiracy that has implications far beyond their sleepy lakeside community.  Think Dopesick meets Ozark meets The Firm.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

In a moment of boredom, I challenged myself to picture a scene – just the first thing to pop into my head – and it was the opening scene of Northwoods, nearly exactly as it’s written in the finished book.  It came to me in such vivid detail that I knew it was a story that was living in my head and demanded to be told.

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Absolutely!  Marge and Eli are the best!

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Kind, honest, broken

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

Various law enforcement rules, like when a federal law enforcement agency might collaborate with local law enforcement.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I try not to edit too much when I write the first draft but I’m not okay with typos or grammatical errors, so I can’t really let those stand.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Not a specific food but more the atmosphere.  Eating somewhere very fancy or very unique is a fun indulgence.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I turned our spare bedroom into a cozy little room with an English country house vibe with dark blue walls and tartan curtains and stacks of books.  I have a bamboo leather-topped desk and a reclining wing chair.

10--Who is an author you admire?

SO MANY!  Colson Whitehead, John Steinbeck, Barbara Kingsolver, Robert Galbraith, Eli Cranor.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery made me want to be a writer.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I particularly remember when my now-agent emailed me to say she would like to offer me representation.  That was truly the first step on this journey.  I was at work when I got the email and was freaking out.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Historical romance (read: bodice rippers!)

14--What’s your favorite movie?

Dirty Dancing

15--What is your favorite season?

Summer

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I throw myself a party.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

“The Great” on Hulu; DON’T KNOW TOUGH by Eli Cranor

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Mexican

19--What do you do when you have free time?

Cook or bake something special

20--What can readers expect from you next?

I’m currently working on the second book in the Northwoods series.

NORTHWOODS by Amy Pease

Northwoods

A Novel

The dark underbelly of an idyllic Midwestern resort town is revealed in the aftermath of a murder with ties to America’s opioid epidemic in this unputdownable and thrilling debut that is perfect for fans of James Lee Burke, William Kent Krueger, and Mindy Mejia.

Eli North is not okay.

His drinking is getting worse by the day, his emotional wounds after a deployment to Afghanistan are as raw as ever, his marriage and career are over, and the only job he can hold down is with the local sheriff’s department. And that’s only because the sheriff is his mother—and she’s overwhelmed with small town Shaky Lake’s dwindling budget and the fallout from the opioid epidemic. The Northwoods of Wisconsin may be a vacationer’s paradise, but amidst the fishing trips and campfires and Paul Bunyan festivals, something sinister is taking shape.

When the body of a teenage boy is found in the lake, it sets in motion an investigation that leads Eli to a wealthy enclave with a violent past, a pharmaceutical salesman, and a missing teenage girl. Soon, Eli and his mother, along with a young FBI agent, are on the hunt for more than just a killer.

If Eli solves the case, could he finally get the shot at redemption he so desperately needs? Or will answers to this dark case elude him and continue to bring destruction to the Northwoods?
