I love rom-com movies. I always have. I love the iconic scenes you’ll never forget once you’ve seen the movie. Like when two people are running through a field of flowers, arms outstretched, finally realizing that the person they are in love with has been right in front of them all the time. Or when they have been strangers throughout the movie only to agree to meet and realize they have known each other all along. Admit it. Don’t you feel the tug on your heartstrings?  In some instances, don’t you feel like your own heart will break if they don’t get together?

The dawning awareness for the hero and heroine is my favorite moment in any movie. When the flirting or fighting is over and they admit their love with such passion that you know their fate is sealed. This was one of the most important moments I wanted to craft in my Christmas romance, HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS.

As a tribute to rom-coms and lovers everywhere, here are my top five favorite dawning moments from movies:

In It Happened One Night, Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) and Peter Warne (Clark Gable) are once again in the ramshackle hotel room. The wall of Jericho “blanket” is hung to keep them apart. And then Peter plays a bugle and the blanket drops to the floor. We don’t need to see their embrace. We know their love will be consummated, and their lives together will blossom.

In You’ve Got Mail, when Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) is walking across the bridge in a field of flowers, and suddenly Joe Fox’s (Tom Hanks) dog Brinkley runs across and then Joe appears, and Kathleen realizes he is the man she’s been communicating with by email all this time, the world simply stops and Kathleen says, “I wanted it to be you. I wanted it to be you so badly.”

In Runaway Bride, Maggie Carpenter (Julia Roberts) cannot figure out what kind of man she wants to marry, let alone what kind of eggs she likes to eat. When columnist Ike Graham (Richard Gere) presses her to make a decision about eggs, she can’t. By the end of the movie, however, when Maggie does decide, she goes to tell Ike the answer, and the moment between them is electric.

In While You Were Sleeping, Lucy (Sandra Bullock) is supposedly engaged to the older brother but she falls for the younger brother, Jack (Bill Pullman). When she finally allows herself to admit it—in the middle of her sham marriage to the older brother at the hospital—it’s one of the most endearing moments in any movie. Lucy has to calm Jack’s grandmother, admit that his uncle was lying to him, and, well, take the blame for miscommunication. It isn’t until a short while later when Jack shows up, with family in tow, to woo her back that their love comes full circle. Charming to the max.

In Philadelphia Story, Tracy Lord (Katherine Hepburn) and C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant) can’t make it work. She’s going to settle for a man who is not her equal. In addition, she toys with feelings for the reporter Macaulay Connors (Jimmy Stewart), who falls hard for her. But Tracy and Dexter are always meant to be together, and when they realize it and reunite, it’s so heartwarming.

HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS by Daryl Wood Gerber

Hope for the Holidays

Hope Lyons's husband ran through all their money and split Portland, Oregon, forcing Hope to sell her beloved Pie in the Sky bakery and move with her two children back to charming Hope Valley, her hometown. She has been working as a waitress and pinching pennies to get their lives back on track; however, when her children win KPRL's Spirit of Christmas vacation contest, Hope worries about the extra expenses she will incur on such a trip and turns it down.

Steve Waldren, the handsome KPRL sports anchor, is now of an age where he can't afford to have a gap on his resume. His confidence is already shaky, ever since his fiancée dumped him, claiming Steve would never reach his potential. When Steve's boss dubs Steve to be Giveaway Santa, he's forced to accept. Steve, as Santa, readily travels to Hope Valley to award the prize. But when Hope refuses it, he's at a loss. His boss threatens to fire him if he doesn't convince Hope to take it, and Steve does all he can to change her mind. But Hope can be stubborn, life can be a challenge, and Hope's children can be unpredictable. Not to mention, the truth isn't always what it seems.

Will Hope and Steve find their happily ever after? It might take a holiday miracle.
