2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
Trudy Yoder longs for a future together. Micah Weaver is stuck on someone in his past. Both of their lives take an unexpected turn when Micah stumbles onto a revelation that shatters their assumptions.
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
All my Amish novels are set in the fictitious town of Stoney Ridge in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Stoney Ridge is a lovely, peaceful rural village where familiar faces often pop on and off stage.
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Trudy Yoder would be a wonderful, everyday kind of friend. The best.
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Loyal, eager, amusing
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
This is a story about a young woman with a mental illness and how her illness affects her family. I did a deep dive into studying this type of mental illness: how it presents, what can happen without medication and counseling and community care…and what can happen with such treatments.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
Great question! I try to keep things moving along in the manuscript until the first draft is done. The drafty draft. Next comes clean up, editing, polishing. Then it goes to my first reader who does a “flyover read.” Back to more editing. Off it goes to my Revell editor. Aaaand back it comes with needed revisions. I’m thankful for this wonderful process. The end goal is to make a book as good as it can possibly be.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Chips and (really good) guacamole. Can. Not. Resist.
9--Describe your writing space/office!
A tiny laundry room that I share with two big yellow labs.
10--Who is an author you admire?
So many! But it might surprise you that I read mostly non-fiction. Here’s what I’m currently in the middle of (and would recommend): Outlive: The Science & Art of Longevity by Peter Attia. Very readable book from a brainy M.D.
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
Catherine Marshall’s non-fiction books, such as The Helper, To Live Again, and Beyond Ourselves. I was a teen when I was first introduced to those books. When life throws a hardball, I still reach for them.
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (When you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
Here was a moment I’ll never forget: I was contracted for a non-fiction book with Revell, and had pitched an idea for a novel to my editor. One morning, I woke up to read an email from my agent with an offer from Revell for a three-book series. Beyond my wildest dreams! And that started the ball rolling for my fiction writing.
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
Historical fiction.
14--What’s your favorite movie?
To Kill a Mockingbird (I’ve always been fond of Gregory Peck).
15--What is your favorite season?
It’s hard to beat a summer morning in my garden (I have a huge garden).
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
Quietly! I don’t let anyone know. Not because of the number…I just feel awkward being the center of attention.
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
The podcast Field Trip by the Washington Post about our country’s beautiful national parks. Same narrator has done other series--Presidential and Constitution. I would definitely recommend all of them!
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Chinese is my fav. On Christmas night, our family gathers in the kitchen to create a wonderful dinner full of Chinese recipes. I look forward to that dinner all year long.
19--What do you do when you have free time?
Tennis! I play at least three times a week.
20--What can readers expect from you next?
Next May, Love on a Whim will release. Book 3 in the Cape Cod Creamery series. It’s a perfect book for summer! And a wonderful wrap up to the entire series, if I do say so myself.
