1--What is the title of your latest release?

BLACK SHEEP

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

A cynical twentysomething must confront her unconventional family’s dark secrets, resulting in her own crisis of faith.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

I’m from New Jersey, and thought it was about time I set a novel in my home state. There’s lots of fun spooky things in New Jersey, it’s a great setting for a horror novel.

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Yes, but I’d have to be sure to stay on her good side…

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Cynical, prickly, and conflicted.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

With every book I write, I learn something new about myself. Writing BLACK SHEEP, I learned I have a lot more faith in the world than I thought did.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I wait until I have a full draft before I go in and edit. It’s important for me to get it all down first.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Goat cheese. It makes me feel fancy.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I have a delightfully creepy little office. I write surrounded by crystal skulls and skeleton candles and lots of books.

10--Who is an author you admire?

Shirley Jackson is my be all end all.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

This is a cliché answer, but The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. It made me feel less alone in those challenging teen years. I felt a profound connection to it, and it made me realize the true power of stories.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I was at my day job, huddled in my boss’s office, staring out at the New York City skyline in complete disbelief. It’s been five years and it still feels like I’m in a dream.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Horror! Or anything with a speculative element.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

That’s a hard one! But probably Jaws. I watch it every summer and never go in the ocean.

15--What is your favorite season?

Fall. Give me foliage, give me pumpkin spice lattes, give me sweaters, give me Halloween!

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Ideally at The Cheesecake Factory.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I’ve been rewatching Freaks and Geeks. It’s my favorite show of all time, and it just gets better every time I watch it. If you haven’t seen it, it’s now up on Hulu!

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

All of it! Don’t make me choose! Take me to a buffet and let me have it all!

19--What do you do when you have free time?

I love to read, go for long walks, visit spooky places, or sit in front of the TV for hours eating junk!

20--What can readers expect from you next?

Another horror novel is on the horizon.

BLACK SHEEP by Rachel Harrison

Black Sheep

A cynical twentysomething must confront her unconventional family’s dark secrets in this fiery, irreverent horror novel from the author of Such Sharp Teeth and Cackle.

Nobody has a “normal” family, but Vesper Wright’s is truly...something else. Vesper left home at eighteen and never looked back—mostly because she was told that leaving the staunchly religious community she grew up in meant she couldn’t return. But then an envelope arrives on her doorstep.

Inside is an invitation to the wedding of Vesper’s beloved cousin Rosie. It’s to be hosted at the family farm. Have they made an exception to the rule? It wouldn’t be the first time Vesper’s been given special treatment. Is the invite a sweet gesture? An olive branch? A trap? Doesn’t matter. Something inside her insists she go to the wedding. Even if it means returning to the toxic environment she escaped. Even if it means reuniting with her mother, Constance, a former horror film star and forever ice queen.

When Vesper’s homecoming exhumes a terrifying secret, she’s forced to reckon with her family’s beliefs and her own crisis of faith in this deliciously sinister novel that explores the way family ties can bind us as we struggle to find our place in the world.
