Carla Simpson | Ghostly Images, Levitating Objects, and a Beautiful Assistant Who Disappears

amazon

1--What is the title of your latest release?

DEADLY ILLUSION - Mikaela Forsythe and Angus Brodie Murder Mystery Book 4

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Ghostly images that appear and float across the stage, objects that levitate into the air, and a beautiful assistant who disappears inside a glass box.  The case is no sleight of hand, but a series of dangerous illusions meant to deceive both Mikaela and Brodie, and perhaps make them both disappear for good, while the murderer goes about his deadly scheme.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

That’s easy since the series is set in late 19th century London; however, they will be traveling in this book and in Book 5

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Oh yes, particularly since she is someone very real.

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Strong-willed (I count that as one), stubborn, persistent (like a bulldog with a bone)

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

The art of disappearing goes back centuries with very creative methods. Fascinating.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I edit as I go along.  I want to know exactly what has already happened as I create the next murder/clue/action sequence.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Hot fudge brownies with vanilla ice-cream. Oh, yes.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

When I started writing it was a close - yes a closet, even though it was large.  Now I have my own office.

10--Who is an author you admire?

Janet Evanovich; love her books.  Yes, I know they are contemporary, still, I love the humor, the attraction, and the variety of characters.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

That’s a hard one.  There are so many.  But probably Outlander by Diana Gabaldan—a different sort of romance; yes, I know time travel, but different between the main characters.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

When I first started, I received two contract offers for my first book (several years ago), in the mail of all things.  Since then, I am now published (Kindle and print) by Oliver Heber Books.  The first contact was phone followed up by email with the publisher.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

I love historical mysteries with a little romance (big surprise huh!); I’ve always been a fan of historical and I love the challenges people face.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

I recently watched (again), A Walk in the Clouds.  Love that movie.

15--What is your favorite season?

Late fall/winter; love the cold weather, fire in the fireplace, frost on the windows, and holidays.

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I celebrate each year by subtracting 2 years off the number; a dram of whisky with the man in my life.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

The Outlander series: so well done, and the history taps into our own family history during the Revolutionary War.  We had a Fraser cousin on the patriot side.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

A really good Beef Wellington, so yummy.  Definitely comfort food.

19--What do you do when you have free time?

I’m trying to figure that one out… when and if I get some free time.  I will make free time to return to Scotland.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

A Deadly Vow – Book 5 in the series, Deadly Obsession – Book 6 in the series; both to be released in 202; with more to follow into 2024.  So many murder cases for Brodie and Mikaela!

DEADLY ILLUSION by Carla Simpson

Angus Brodie and Mikaela Forsythe Murder Mystery #4

Deadly Illusion

What is real or only an illusion?

Ghostly images that appear and float across the stage, objects that levitate into the air, and a beautiful assistant who disappears inside a glass box, then reappears inside a second glass box. All while the audience at the Crystal Palace, including amateur investigator Mikaela Forsythe, watch the performance.

Is it real? Can the audience believe what they see?
Then, an evening with her friend, Theodora Templeton while attending the one-night performance by master illusionist, Jean Luc Betard, takes a ghastly turn and plunges Mikaela headlong into murder when the illusionist's young assistant is found dead at the end of his newest stunt.

The police, specifically Chief Inspector Abberline, who is also in attendance, declare it a tragic accident in an illusion gone wrong. But after making her own observations Mikaela is not convinced and places a call to Private Investigator Angus Brodie.

Theirs is a complicated partnership, more so with his latest work with the Special Services organization at the conclusion of their previous case, and that particularly complicated conversation he insisted on having with her.
Irritating man!

Never the less, Mikaela is certain there is more amiss than merely a tragic accident, and Brodie is forced to admit that she may be right, pulling them together once more, personal feelings aside. Or possibly not...

That certainty takes both of them on a dangerous trail of clues that appear and then just as quickly disappear much like the illusionist's tricks.

The case is no slight of hand, but a series of dangerous illusions meant to deceive both Mikaela and Brodie, and perhaps make them both disappear for good, while the murderer goes about his deadly scheme.
And then, there is that conversation that she walked out on before, but he insists on having, even in the midst of murder.

Oh my!

About Carla Simpson

Carla Simpson

Twenty five books and counting! Or is it twenty six? Very possibly by the time this is posted. I started this crazy journey a few years ago, after reading several historical romances then declaring "I can do this!" Husband, always supportive. replied, "Then do it!" And she did, as the saying goes. Along the way, there were two romantic suspense novels and a time-travel novel, and two film options... But I digress. My current series is a historical murder mystery with a hint of romance, starting with A Deadly Affair, Angus Brodie and Mikaela Forsythe, Murder Mystery Book 1, with Book 2 to be released soon, followed by Book 3, and... We live in the Sierra Mountains outside of Yosemite National Park and when not writing my next book, we hit the trails on our horses.
