1--What is the title of your latest release?

THE VALKYRIE'S SHADOW

2--What's the "elevator pitch" for your new book?

The Valkyrie's Shadow is a YA Sapphic Fantasy about Valkyries, who are warrior women on horseback. In this sequel to The Valkyrie's Daughter, Sigrid rises to the challenge of being a leader on Sleipnir, the eight-legged war horse descended from Loki. But the way his power affects her threatens to destroy her friendships, her relationship with Mariam, and much more.

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

After deciding I wanted to write about Valkyries, which are part of Norse mythology, it was a matter of picking which of the nine Norse worlds they should live on. I did some research and ended up choosing the beautiful world of Vanaheim, which was home of the Vanir gods.

4--Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Yes! I'd love to hang out with Sigrid and go riding together.

5--What are three words that describe your hero?

Soft, ambitious, dangerous.

6--What's something you learned while writing this book?

Writing this series has involved fun research into Norse mythology and Vikings. I learned a lot about the Norse gods and legends.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I try to avoid editing while writing the first draft because it can kill the momentum, but sometimes I can't help it. I think it's important for writers to give themselves permission to write freely and terribly during the first draft—you can go back and fix it later!

8--What's your favorite foodie indulgence?

I never go a day without chocolate.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I have a gorgeous wooden desk covered in books, a salt lamp, journals, my writing awards, and trinkets, which I sit-stand at during the day. When I'm feeling lazy, I move to the couch and curl up in the least ergonomic position imaginable.

10--Who is an author you admire?

Kate Quinn. Her writing style and storytelling ability are so excellent. She's got a gift.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

HOLES by Louis Sachar. I was ten, and it was the first book I'd read that had an ending that really blew me away. I remember finishing it while I was on the couch in the living room, experiencing that now-familiar feeling of having your mind blown by a great ending. I think I sat there for ten minutes, staring into space, thinking about it. That experience really propelled my love of books.

12--Tell us about when you got "the call." (when you found out your book was going to be published)

Ahh, I remember it vividly. I'd just gotten home from the barn and was at the top of the stairs asking my boyfriend (now husband) how his day was. My phone lit up as he was talking, and my gaze snagged on the notification: a new email from Entangled Publishing. I rudely cut him off mid-sentence to grab my phone and open the email. Then I said calmly, "I just got a publishing offer." The news sank in and I did one of those ecstatic giggles and we hugged. Then I texted my family. It was a good day.

13--What's your favorite genre to read?

I can't pick a favorite because I rotate between genres! Romance, thrillers, women's fiction, autobiographies, self-help, fantasy, and whatever catches my attention on Audible.

14--What's your favorite movie?

This should come as no surprise... Thor: Ragnarok.

15--What is your favorite season?

Spring / early summer. A nice balance of warm temperatures but it's still lush and the air is crisp.

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

As an introvert, I love a nice dinner with a few of my closest family and friends.

17--What's a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I'm watching the animated Harley Quinn series right now and loving it. Somehow it works to have an R-rated animated series for this character—the swearing and violence just fits all these villains. Also, Harley and Ivy are one of my favorite duos.

18--What's your favorite type of cuisine?

Italian. I can eat pasta any day.

19--What do you do when you have free time?

Ride my horse, Flynn, walk my dog, Joey, and otherwise spend time outside.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

I'm working on the third and final book in this Valkyrie series! I also have more sapphic romances coming soon, including THE ROAD TRIP AGREEMENT, launching in August with Ylva Publishing.

THE VALKYRIE'S SHADOW by Tiana Warner

The Valkyrie's Shadow

Being both a valkyrie and a princess isn’t turning out quite the way Sigrid imagined. The other valkyries still treat her like a stable hand. Her relationship with Mariam is less “long-distance” and more “worlds apart.” And lately, she’s been wondering if Sleipnir, her new horse, isn’t making her a little bit…well, evil.

But Sigrid’s first official valkyrie mission sends ripples through the Nine Worlds. She’s attracted the wrath of not only the Night Elves but their sinister king, who wants nothing more than to bring darkness down on everyone. Worse yet, Loki might just be interfering with the balance of light and dark…

When war threatens the shores of Vanaheim and her friends are in danger of being exiled, Sigrid makes a deal with the new queen. She will ride Sleipnir against their enemies and use his might to defeat them, even as he pulls her closer to that line between good and evil.

What she becomes will either save everyone…or unleash disaster upon them all.
