- How would you describe your family or your childhood?
I had the absolute best childhood in the world. With a father unlike any other. Truly remarkable. He gave me Grade A pep talks every morning. Said how I’m such a little shit and goddamn loser. Yeah, truly the best.
- What was your greatest talent?
Lying. Not lying down (Lily would want to claim the couch potato talent). I am just a great liar.
- Significant other?
My best friend. The love of my entire life. Lily Calloway. No one else can have her. She’s mine.
- Biggest challenge in relationships?
Challenges? What are those? We’re perfect. Of course I’m joking. Lil and I, we’ve faced mountains together—that little thing called “enabling” and the other little thing called “co-dependency” all wrapped into the big thing called “addiction.”
- Where do you live?
Grew up in Philadelphia. The richest part. Not trying to be a conceited prick. It’s just a fact. Now I’m around the Princeton campus. Sometimes back in Philly. Depends.
- Do you have any enemies?
The better question is—do I have any friends? Enemies are the sure thing. I’ll probably piss you off at some point. Take a number. Get in the back of the line. It’s a never-ending one.
- How do you feel about the place where you are now? Is there something you are particularly attached to, or particularly repelled by, in this place?
I feel…agitated. I want to drink. I know I shouldn’t. Is there something I’m particularly attached to? That would be Lily, and if there’s a day I’m not attached to her, it’s not a day I want to really live through. That’s the truth.
- Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?
Thank God I have no kids. I’m not about to take care of a pet either. They’re both better off without me.
- What do you do for a living?
According to my dad, I live to make his life one giant disappointment.
- Greatest disappointment?
Not being there for Lily when I should’ve been.
- Greatest source of joy?
Lily Martha Calloway
- What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?
Grab a bottle of Maker’s Mark. Joking…sort of. I like reading comics with Lil.
- What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?
Not being the man I want to be. Not yet…anyway.
- What keeps you awake at night?
Now that I’m sober, everything.
- What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?
Staying sober for myself, for Lily, and also, who the hell is anonymously texting my girlfriend? You’re dead.
- Is there something that you need or want that you don’t have? For yourself or for someone important to you?
Haven’t you heard? I’m a rich bastard. I don’t need anything. But really, I just want Lily to be happy, and I want to be happy with her. But it might be too much to ask for a good thing to happen to a bad person.
- Why don’t you have it? What is in the way?
Me. I’m standing in my own way.
