Instead of trying to find your perfect match in a dating app, we bring you the “Author-Reader Match" where we introduce you to authors you may fall in love with. It's our great pleasure to present Lauren Willig!

Writes:

Hi!  I write historical fiction about the strong heroines who have been written out of the history books.  I started my career writing about female spies in the Napoleonic Wars (The Secret History of the Pink Carnation!), and then moved on to all sorts of other interesting corners of history, most recently the 1890s (yep, the Gilded Age—but there was so much more than just gilt!).

My latest book, based on a true story, follows an 1896 Smith College graduate as she goes to Greece to train as an archaeologist, only to be told that women can’t excavate.  In a fit of pique, she takes a Red Cross nursing class and finds herself swept up in first the Greco-Turkish War of 1897 and then the Spanish-American War of 1898, learning her true strength in the battlefields of Cuba with Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders.  The book is called TWO WARS AND A WEDDING—and I promise, there are actually two wars AND a wedding in the book.

About:

I was that girl toting a tattered mass market copy of Kathleen E. Woodiwiss’s A Rose in Winter to school in second grade.  I found historical fiction and historical romance young and never looked back.  After a stint working on a PhD in history (so I could use it to write novels, of course!) and a much briefer stint as a lawyer, I settled down in my hometown, New York City, to write immersive historical stories that range from early 19th century Portugal to colonial Barbados to 1920s Kenya.  I also co-write with two good friends, Beatriz Williams and Karen White (confession: we started writing together so we could get our publisher to pay for our girls’ trips—and it worked!).

When I’m not writing, I’m usually being lectured on dinosaurs by my preschooler or tripping over my third grader’s LOL dolls.  I have a close, personal relationship with my Nespresso machine.

What I’m looking for in my ideal reader match:

  • Someone who loves to travel! Get ready to go with me to Greece and Cuba….
  • Eager to experience different places and time periods.
  • Not afraid of adventure. (This ride may get a little bumpy….)
  • Loves strong heroines who aren’t afraid to speak their mind.
  • Friendships! Someone who gets that people are complicated and friendships can be messy, but they’re worth fighting for.
  • And, of course, someone who enjoys a bit of romance in their historical fiction…. No matter the time or the place (or the number of wars in the title), everyone deserves her happily ever after.

What to expect if we're compatible:

  • Sweeping historical stories that take you all sorts of places.
  • Strong female friendships.
  • Heroes who love the heroine for who she is.
  • All sorts of family secrets and skeletons in the closet.
  • Random historical facts that feel like they shouldn’t be true but are!

TWO WARS AND A WEDDING by Lauren Willig

Two Wars and a Wedding

From New York Times bestselling author Lauren Willig: a dramatic coming-of-age story with a dual timeline and a single heroine—a bold and adventuring young woman who finds herself caught up in two very different wars on both sides of the Atlantic.

September 1896: An aspiring archaeologist, Smith College graduate Betsy Hayes travels to Athens, desperate to break into the male-dominated field of excavation. In the midst of the heat and dust of Greece she finds an unlikely ally in Charles, Baron de Robecourt, one of the few men who takes her academic passion seriously. But when a simmering conflict between Greece and Turkey erupts into open warfare, Betsy throws herself into the conflict as a nurse, not knowing that the decision will change her life forever—and cause a deep and painful rift with her oldest friend, Ava.

June 1898: Betsy has sworn off war nursing—but when she gets the word that her estranged friend Ava is headed to Cuba with Clara Barton and the Red Cross to patch up the wounded in the Spanish-American War, Betsy determines to stop her the only way she knows how: by joining in her place. Battling heat, disease, and her own demons, Betsy follows Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders straight to the heart of the fighting, where she is forced to confront her greatest fears to save both old friends and new….

Set during an electrifying era of nation-building, idealism, and upheaval, Two Wars and a Wedding is the tale of two remarkable women striving to make their place in a man’s world—an unforgettable saga of friendship, love, and fighting for what is right.
