Jennifer Vido: What inspired your new release, GOOD FOR YOU?

Camille Pagan: I can’t remember how this story came to me, which is unusual; I just remember that I was supposed to be writing another book I was under contract for, and I couldn’t stop thinking about this idea. I started writing and a few days later I had several chapters on my hands—which was when I knew Good for You was my next novel. I wrote the entire thing in about two months (which is really fast for me!) then sent it to my agent. We weren’t sure what my publisher would think, but to our relief, they loved it as much as we did.

Jen: What’s happening in Aly Jackson’s professional life?

Camille:Aly’s just landed the top job at All Good magazine, a Real Simple-esque publication. She’s been training her entire adult life for the gig, but six months into it, she has a meltdown after hearing her coworkers’ trash-talking her. What they don’t know is that Aly’s recently lost her brother, who was her lifeline. She thinks she’s coping okay—but of course, she isn’t at all. The magazine’s publisher insists she take a month-long leave of absence.

Jen: Where does Aly retreat for some overdue downtime?

Camille: She heads to the lake house she recently inherited from her brother, Luke, after his untimely death. Aly’s been in denial about his passing—and home ownership, as she’s been ignoring her brother’s attorney’s calls for months. When she arrives at the house, she’s shocked to discover that Luke’s best friend, Wyatt, is already living there. Worse? It turns out that he inherited the place, too.

Jen: How does Wyatt thwart her grand plans?

Camille: Aly is determined to get in, get the place sold, and get back to New York so she can prove she’s still worthy of her dream job. Trouble is, Wyatt has no interest in selling the lake house. He believes that Luke left it to both of them for a reason, even if they have no clue what that reason might be. Aly and Wyatt are complete opposites, or so it seems. But they soon discover they have more than Luke in common—and that leaning on each other may be the only way they’re able to heal.

Jen: What do you hope readers take away from your story?

Camille: Like all my novels, Good for You is both funny and sad, which is how I tend to look at life. Aly is used to going it alone—which is something that many trauma survivors, myself included, are often really good at. But as humans, we’re not solitary creatures. Letting the right people get close to us can be a powerful way of healing. And as Aly discovers, figuring out who “the right” people are requires letting your guard down a little and trying new things.

Jen: Let’s switch gears and talk about your promotional plans. What’s the best way for readers to stay up-to-date on your latest happenings?

Camille: I’m most active on Instagram, and you can learn more about my work on my website.

Jen: What’s currently on your TBR stack?

Camille: I just finished Maddie Dawson’s latest, Snap Out of It, and it was absolutely delightful—I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a light but meaningful read. Next up is Hilary Mantel’s Giving up the Ghost, which my dear friend and fellow author Katherine Chen sent me (speaking of which, Katherine’s new novel, Joan, is a must-read).

Jen: Besides being a bestselling author, you also are an author coach. Please share with us a glimpse of your exceptional services for aspiring authors.

Camille:

I love inspiring writers to go for their big dreams; I feel that there are too many people telling them, “If you can do anything else, go do that because this is impossible.” It may not be easy, but it’s definitely not impossible if you’re willing to do the work and stick with it. My coaching combines strategies with research-backed coaching techniques with roots in cognitive behavioral science. That combination of planning and mindset helped me create the career of my dreams, and now I help other authors create theirs. If you’re a writer, you can learn more at EvenBetter.co (be sure to check out the “How To” page for loads of free info and advice.)

Jen: Sneak peek! What’s your current work in progress?

Camille: I’m actually between projects right now—so time will tell!

Jen: Thanks for sharing the inside scoop behind the writing of Good for You. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Camille: Thank you Jen! It’s always a delight to chat with you.

GOOD FOR YOU by Camille Pagan

Good for You

A warm and witty love story about making the most of life’s not-so-little curveballs by the #1 Amazon Charts bestselling author of Life and Other Near-Death Experiences.

Aly Jackson has waited her whole life to become editor in chief of All Good magazine. But six months into the job, she overhears her coworkers belittling her. Aly’s clapback? A very public, career-jeopardizing meltdown. To undo the mess, she agrees to a monthlong unpaid leave.

Reluctant but determined to turn misfortune into opportunity, Aly retreats to the Lake Michigan beach house her brother, Luke, left to her when he died nearly a year earlier. Except when Aly arrives, she discovers Luke’s slacker best friend, Wyatt, inherited the place, too.

Wyatt is unkempt, unmotivated, and totally uninterested in Aly’s desire to sell. Yet as battle lines are drawn, Aly wonders whether she and this wild card have more than Luke in common. But is she willing to swap her lifelong dreams for a shot at healing her broken heart?
