Murder at an Irish Castle, February 2023

It’s a new year with new authors, new series, and just released killer mysteries! One of those novels hit my library and I am lucky enough to give you the latest scoop on this brand-new gem.

I know my recent choices have made readers travel outside the cozy American towns we love so much, and I hope you won’t mind packing your bags once more—to the Emerald Isle with a Rodeo Drive wedding designer who’s looking to the island’s lucky charms to bail her out of a financial nightmare. I mean inheriting the family castle has to be the answer she’s looking for, right?

Except the luck of the Irish isn’t exactly running with Rayne McGrath—the success of her upscale bridal shop ran away with her fiancee/business partner who skipped town with all of their funds. Broke, yet determined to help her brides-to-be’s dreams come true, Rayne travels to Ireland hoping her dead uncle’s estate will be her saving grace to get the shop up and running once more—except not only is his death a horrible tragedy, his generosity comes with more problems than Rayne can solve in the twenty-four-hour window she’s given.

She may be the new owner of a castle she’s loved her entire life, but her inheritance has made an enemy of the cousin she never knew she had. To make matters worse, as the lady of the castle, she’s responsible for an entire town’s survival. Never mind that she’s already on a mission to repair the damage to her dreams and her business that her own bad taste in men has created, saving an entire town in one year, seems too much for one women to handle—especially when she discovers her uncle didn’t just die in a horrible accident—he was murdered.

Somehow, this pot of gold at the end rainbow feels like a kettle full of Blarney, or maybe that’s her uncle’s dog making life interesting. The cast of characters in Murder at an Irish Castle are vast and wide, with a butler, a housekeeper and cook, not to mention the handsome stablehand and her angry cousin. Rayne’s got an empty wallet and her hands full of trouble, yet she’s determined to save them all as a killer tries to stop her in her tracks.

This trip was loads of fun. The people I met were kind, compassionate, sarcastic, dangerous, and some were perilously charming as well, not to mention the lovable creatures I couldn’t help but adore. The most important part of journey, however, was the development of a mystery series that kept me wanting more. Rayne faces the adversities and comes out stronger because of it with a new extended family to help fill the gaps in her damaged heart.

2023 has had a promising start and I can’t want for the what’s to come! My thanks go to author Ellie Brannigan, Crooked Lane Books, the fabulous narrator Traci Odom and Netgalley who made my road trip so much more entertaining than the open road.

Until next month, get cozy and read on!

MURDER AT AN IRISH CASTLE by Ellie Brannigan

An Irish Castle Mystery

Murder at an Irish Castle

Fans of Hannah Dennison and Carlene O’Connor’s mysteries are in for a treat with Ellie Brannigan’s captivating debut cozy mystery, complete with a sharp and endearing protagonist.

Rodeo Drive bridalwear designer Rayne McGrath expected her thirtieth birthday to start with a power lunch and end with champagne, lobster, and a diamond engagement ring from her fiancé. Instead, flat-broke and busted, she’s on a plane to Ireland where she discovers that she’s inherited a run-down family castle. Uncle Nevin’s will contains a few caveats—for example, if Rayne doesn’t turn McGrath Castle around within a year, the entire village will be financially destroyed.

With the fate of the town in her hands, and rumors that Rayne’s uncle’s death wasn’t actually an accident, she can’t possibly go back to her old life in L.A. As the devastating truth about her uncle dawns on Rayne, it’s not just her reputation that’s on the line, it’s her life.

Featuring a sharp and endearing protagonist, a colorful and quirky locale, and replete with twists and turns befitting an old Irish village, the first in Brannigan’s mystery series transports us to a milieu as romantic as it is deadly.
