“You are.” He growls. “F*ck. I can’t last any longer, baby girl.”
“Good. I want to know you want me that much.”
“I want you more than I should. You’re a drug, Heather. I’d sell my soul for another hit, another chance to be inside you.”
“But drugs destroy. That’s not what I want.”
“Fine. A multivitamin. I know I’m better when I’m with you.”
I can’t help but laugh. My core contracts, and he thrusts hard before going still. He rests his forehead against mine. I cup his jaw.
“I have never been called a multivitamin before. That might be one of the weirdest and most romantic things I’ve ever heard.”
I sigh as we kiss once more. Part of it is from satisfaction and post-coital bliss. But part of it is regret because I can’t linger.
“How late do you think your sister will be out?”
“She and Mike’ll probably be back by ten. Danielle isn’t a night owl and never has been. Sleeping Beauty likes her rest. I can’t blame her since she’s home with Cadence all day. He’s exhausting.”
I consider what Danielle and Mike would say if Aleks came with me. It’s not like I’m a teenager having my boyfriend over.
“Can I drop you off? Then—if you want—a driver could bring you into Manhattan. Or I—”
Aleks looks so uncertain, even nervous. He’s worried now that our impromptu sex is over, I don’t want to see him.
“Cadence goes to bed at eight. We’d have two hours to ourselves. Would you like to come with me?”
“Yeah. That would be nice.”
“Okay. We have to get going.”
He’s back in his suit nearly as fast as I pick out jeans and a top. He watches me as I put on a bra and panties. He scowls at the thong. I laugh. It surprises me to see his Land Rover parked outside. I assumed he would be in a town car, especially since he said he’d send a driver to get me. Then again, he said he would drop me off.
He held the door open to the elevator and waited for me to get on first. Then he held the door open to my building and let me go ahead of him. Now he’s holding the car door open. Something tells me that someone ingrained these manners in his very soul. He’s not trying to impress me or flatter me. How old-fashioned were his parents?
“Did you have a good time wherever you went?”
I try to keep my tone light. He glances at me before he answers. He just programmed my sister’s address into his GPS.
“It was work. I got to spend time with my brothers, and even my cousins, but it wasn’t a vacation. It got pretty monotonous.”
“What were you doing?”
He seems to hesitate for a moment, but then he comes back with a solid answer.
“Negotiations sucked us in, and it got combative. It took some strategizing and patience, but it paid off. We gained what we wanted, but the cost was more than we planned. Before the negotiations started, we had to do some assessments and make a final determination on the valuation of the arrangement. Then we needed to ensure our valuation was accurate. So boring stuff, basically.”
“Is that all real estate or venture capitalism stuff?”
I don’t really understand what venture capitalism is. I think it’s just investing in businesses that’ll make you money.
“No. We handle a lot of international trade. We were dealing with some foreign adversaries.”
