2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
NYPD academy washout Grigg Orlov must find the murderers of his immigrant father before he’s the next to die - his only clue an eerie artifact of the Soviet black market.
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
The idea for the book started with the bone records, which were bootlegs of American rock ‘n’ roll songs cut from X-rays in the Soviet Union from 1945-1963. I loved the idea of including bone records in a story, but I didn’t want to set the book in the Soviet Union in, say, 1962. In Brooklyn, several neighborhoods are called Little Odessa because of the large proportion of Russian immigrants that live there. Older immigrants in these neighborhoods—Coney Island, Sheepshead Bay, Gravesend—would know about the discs, so I set the novel in Coney Island. It helped that I’m a huge Coney Island fan, with many visits over the years.

Yes, but would he want to hang out with me?
5--What are three words that describe your sleuth?
Learning, instinctive, undaunted
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
I learned a great deal about the bone records, and only some of that information went into the novel. They fascinate me. There’s just one non-fiction book about them.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I do some editing as I draft to check momentum and voice, but my real revision happens after the first draft is completed. I do four more.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
The king cut prime rib at Keen’s Chop House, New York City.
9--Describe your writing space/office!
It’s a former sunporch off the master bedroom converted for four-season use. My desk is at one end, with bookshelves on either side of my door. There are windows on three sides. The walls are decorated with my son’s art and notes and photos from students I’ve worked with on newspaper projects.

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)
Last January, I decided to become a hybrid author and publish The Bone Records independently.

Crime, including mysteries, thrillers, and espionage.

The Last of the Mohicans

Autumn
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
Quietly with pizza and beer, as I have since I was 14 (when the beverage was root beer).

20--What can readers expect from you next?
I’ve started a new novel called Ghost Paper. I wanted to write a story that dealt with the 2,500 newspapers that have gone out of business since 2004. I’m telling that story through the murder of one newspaper by a hedge fund. It’s also a conventional murder mystery, of course. People die too.
What would you do if you found a bone record—a black-market Soviet recording made on an X-ray? What if you found it at the site of your father’s murder?

Rich Zahradnik is the author of the thriller The Bone Records and the four critically acclaimed Coleridge Taylor mysteries, including Lights Out Summer, winner of the Shamus Award from the Private Eye Writers of America.
Zahradnik was a journalist for 27 years, working as a reporter and editor in several different media, including online, newspaper, broadcast, magazine and wire services. He held editorial positions at CNN, Bloomberg News, AOL and The Hollywood Reporter.
Zahradnik was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, and received his B.A. in journalism and political science from George Washington University. He lives with his wife Sheri in Pelham, New York, where he writes fiction and teaches kids around the New York area how to publish newspapers. He is providing guidance to the Pelham Examiner, the first community newspaper in New York State managed, edited, reported, and written by people under the age of eighteen.
