1--What is the title of your latest release?

RECKLESS FORTUNE

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Contemporary mail-order bride in Alaska with the rugged bush pilot!

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

The book is the second in my Fortunes of Lost Lake series, so I knew it would take place in Alaska in the vibrant and remote little community we first meet in last year’s Bold Fortune. But this book also involves even more of a survival challenge in the form of a plane crash… so there’s a whole lot more Alaskan wilderness, too!

4--Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?

Absolutely. She’s unflappable, making her exactly the person you’d want in an emergency - and she’s also a lot of fun to have around in non-emergency situations, too. I’m not sure she’d have a lot of use for ME, though, as I don’t have all (any) of her homesteading or survival skills!

5--What are three words that describe your hero?

Hot. Hot. Oh yes, and… HOT.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I learned a LOT about small planes and the fearless bush pilots who fly them in wild conditions!

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I edit as I go along, but a few chapters at a time. I dictate my first drafts, so I have a lot of cleaning up to do, and if I let it get much beyond a few chapters it’s… not good. I try to balance it out between drafting and editing. Though that doesn’t always work, sadly. Whatever gets the book done, I guess!

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

I have a weakness for really, really good cheese. Also, absurdly gourmet chocolate.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I dictate my first drafts in my car while driving out in the beautiful valleys of southern Oregon’s Rogue Valley. Winding roads, mountains, farmland, remote lakes, vineyards—it’s gorgeous. Then I edit in my office at home, which looks a lot like a bookstore since I have so many books piled up pretty much everywhere. On and off the actual bookshelves!

10--Who is an author you admire?

I’m lucky to have met so many wonderful authors over the course of my career and to have admired so many of them—and others from afar—so I’ll pick the author of the most recent book I couldn’t put down: Julie Anne Long. I met her a long, long time ago when we both wrote for the same publisher and have marveled at her writing and storytelling ever since. Last night I stayed up much too late reading YOU WERE MADE TO BE MINE because I couldn’t put it down. The way she tells a story! So that it will live in your heart as if it’s a part of you too! And honestly, she writes sentences that are so beautiful, that capture a moment or a character so perfectly, that I just want to savor them forever. I admire her tremendously.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

There are SO MANY books that changed my life. I hope that books continue to change my life over and over and over again. From the books, I discovered as a child that gave me whole new worlds to inhabit to the books I encountered in school and college and grad school that critically altered how I think about myself and the world I live in, to the romances that taught me we are all worthy of love… I feel lucky every day that I’ve spent my life as a reader!

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)

I had pretty much given up on the bookselling. I think it had been out on submission a while at that point—in my memory it was AGES but that might be some creative license! But I was flying across the country that day and had a layover in Detroit. It was 2003, so there was no Wi-Fi on the plane or anything like that. I saw I had a voicemail from my agent, called back, and she told me the great news. I don’t actually remember what she said. I don’t think I took any of it in. I remember staring out the window at the tarmac and thinking this is it, this is my whole life changing RIGHT NOW. And then I had to sit in a coach seat all the way to Seattle in total disbelief!

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Romance and mysteries - so I particularly love it when a book gives me both!

14--What’s your favorite movie?

Probably Sleepless in Seattle or Home for the Holidays. Both make me want to write books about what comes next.

15--What is your favorite season?

Fall. I love the slide into sweater season. I love brooding weather and moping around as the days get darker quicker. Perfect for reading!

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I would have said I like a quiet dinner with a few close friends or just my husband, but said husband threw me a big surprise party for a recent landmark birthday and the biggest surprise was that I loved that, too!

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I can’t pass up a good British detective show! I quite literally watch them all!

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

I find it hard to pass up a ramen place.

19--What do you do when you have free time?

I taught myself to knit a few years ago, so I love to spend afternoons with friends just knitting and talking. I love a hike with a breathtaking view. I’m a big reader. And over the past five years or so I’ve become increasingly interested in combat sports - particularly Krav Maga!

20--What can readers expect from you next?

I’m lucky enough to write a great many books under a selection of names (Caitlin Crews, Megan Crane, MM Crane, and I’m also half of Hazel Beck) so there’s always something coming out! If you go to my Megan Crane website, you can find all my books and all the online places you can find me, too. Thanks for reading along—and I hope you check out Reckless Fortune!

RECKLESS FORTUNE by M.M. Crane

The Fortunes of Lost Lake Series #2

Reckless Fortune

Bowie Fortune has always liked a risky proposition. A bush pilot out in the Last Frontier, flying in and out of places that give most pilots nightmares is what he lives for. That and his off-the-grid home out by Lost Lake, where his family has been living up close with the elements for generations. When his sister dares him to participate in the local version of a mail-order bride contest, he’s not interested—but Bowie doesn’t back down from a challenge. Even when the challenge turns out to be a woman who makes him want every last thing he knows he shouldn’t.

Entering a summer-long publicity stunt in far-off Alaska might seem extreme, but Autumn McCall has always had an indomitable spirit. She took care of her sisters and father after her mother died, and this is more of the same—since she intends to win the contest. Immersing herself in the pioneer lifestyle is one thing, but what she isn’t expecting is brooding, sharp-eyed Bowie with his wicked smile. As the sparks fly between them, will they burn each other alive—or learn how to simmer their way to a much bigger prize...together?
