Mason Pierce, the hero in HOWLING FOR ATTENTION, is a wolf shifter. In the age-old question for paranormal romance fans of who’s better – I usually prefer shifters. The exception is the hottie vamp Bones from Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress books. What appeals to you about writing shifter characters?
I love writing shifters because they’re such fun creatures. The men are wild, hot but loving and protective. They’re also loyal and let’s not forget they make their mates their priority. I think every woman wants a man like that.
There are Alpha heroes, and then there are Alphaholes. How would you describe Mason? I love shifter heroes who are strong and secure without being overbearing and roid rage-esque.
I feel like Mason is definitely strong and secure. He’s just a man who’s looking for a quiet place to live. He’s not a jerk, but he’s not the life of the party either. He’s messed up in the past and wants to just be alone to deal with it. He’s done with danger, but when he meets Lila all that goes out the window. You see, a protector never stops being a protector. And once Mason realizes Lila is his mate, he will do anything to keep her safe.
How would you describe the small town of Half Moon Key?
Half Moon Key is like a quirky small town full of shifters. I loved the idea of just having everyone know everyone else and their business lol.
What’s the dynamic like between Mason and Lila?
I think the dynamics between them is sweet and sassy. Mason wants Lila’s attention and is willing to do anything to get it. It makes for some interesting moments.
What makes a good female protagonist in a romance? How would you describe Lila?
Personally, I think women want to relate to a female protagonist. The best way for that to happen is to make our female flawed. She can’t be perfect, but she can be perfect for our hero. She has insecurities, problems, life issues just like the rest of us. But I like a heroine who’s also got that inner strength. Who can save herself or at least try. Readers need to root for her. This is where readers are pulled in and can connect with our heroine and want to see her fall in love and get her happily ever after. And I feel Lila fits that description really well.
Is it difficult to write steamy scenes?
When I first started writing, yes. I couldn’t do it in front of anyone. Had to be in my office alone. Now? I will be sitting next to my kid while he watches anime. My brain adjusted. Of course, he doesn’t read the steaminess. He says he’s not trying to need therapy lol!
If you could only pick one of your books, other than this one, for a romance reader unfamiliar with your work, which one would you pick? And why?
I’d say Cannon. I normally go to the first Paranormal Dating Agency (Twice the Growl) or the first Alpha Geek (Knox), but Cannon is such a cool different romance. Plus, the whole idea for that series (Caged and Dangerous) was super unique and happened thanks to my husband.
What’s your favorite part of writing a story – dialogue, action, setting?
I think the action scenes. I love a good fight scene. I also love humor. So when something funny happens, I’m happy.
Other authors I’ve interviewed have told me that the kinds of books they enjoy reading are different from the kind of books they enjoy writing. What do you like to read? Favorite books? Favorite author?
For me this is very true. I love reading horror. My favorite book ever is Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. He created Hannibal Lecter and I’ve loved every one of his books.
What are you currently working on?
A hilarious new series set in a hell resort. Hellscape Holidays. That series is so funny! I’m also working on Mob Ties which is shifter mobster and I gotta say, I love it!
