The Latest in Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy

The Beauty of Genre- Blending

Sometimes when you’re reading a book you come across a series that takes characteristics of one genre with blends it with another. I like to call this “genre-blending” because the books can be categorized into more than one genre. Oftentimes you see Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy mixed together. Because of the paranormal aspect of these books, it’s not hard to incorporate action and suspense into these novels to make them more exciting. We’ve seen this in Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series and Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress. However once in awhile you come across a series where the author takes two totally different genres that you would never think go together and blend them effortlessly to create an intriguing concoction.

Whether it’s taking a time in history to use as a backdrop to a story or amping up the sexiness with paranormal creatures, genre blending has become more and more prominent in fiction. Authors have been getting creative with their stories and the fun shows as these hybrid series are born.

This week I share some of my favorite genre blending books that take the best of all worlds to make a hybrid that is all its own!

GRAVE PHANTOMS by Jenn Bennett

GRAVE PHANTOMS

Set in the flirty backdrop of the 1920’s, Bennett injects her historical series with some mysterious paranormal occurrences that add intrigue to this romance between a fun-loving flapper heroine and her Asian hero.

About: From the author of Grim Shadows and Bitter Spirits comes the new Roaring Twenties novel in the series hailed as “Boardwalk Empire meets Ghost Hunters, but so much better” (Molly Harper, national bestselling author of the Jane Jameson series). Feisty flapper Astrid Magnusson is home from college and yearning for the one thing that’s always been off limits: Bo Yeung, her notorious bootlegging brother’s second-in-command. Unfortunately her dream of an easy reunion proves difficult after a violent storm sends a mysterious yacht crashing into the Magnussons’ docks. What’s worse, the boat disappeared a year ago, and the survivors are acting strangely… Bo has worked with the Magnusson family for years, doing whatever is needed, including keeping his boss’s younger sister out of trouble—and his hands to himself. Of course, that isn’t so easy after Astrid has a haunting vision about the yacht’s disappearance, plunging them into an underground world of old money and dark magic. Danger will drive them closer together, but surviving their own forbidden feelings could be the bigger risk.

HER WILD HERO by Paige Tyler

ALIEN SEPERATION by Gini Koch

ALIEN SEPERATION
ALIEN SEPERATION

The Katherine “Kitty” Katt series is largely Science Fiction but if you look closely there are quite a lot of Urban Fantasy attributes laced through. With snarky dialogue, action-oriented suspense scenes and Kitty’s crew of merry merry men, Koch undoubtedly approaches the series with a UF feel.

About: Life's never easy . . . The Mastermind has finally been identified, but before Jeff and Kitty Katt- Martini can take him down, they, their daughter Jamie, Charles Reynolds, Paul Gower, Christopher White, and several others are zapped out of their solar system and into another. Landing in scattered groups on various areas of Beta Eight in the Alpha Centauri system means getting the team back together will be a major issue. But it's only one of the challenges they'll face. Kitty and Company have to forge alliances with the wide variety of sentient natives on the planet while plotting to create a civil war and overthrow the king - who just may be a clone of one of their bitterest enemies, Ronaldo Al Dejahl. Of course, to do this, they have to overcome an assortment of dangerous obstacles, protect a group of refugees, take mind reading lessons, and seek out unexpected new allies as they journey to the Centerpoint of the world. And once they reach the All Seeing Mountain, new issues and surprises await. Because there's more than a small war going on - they're in the midst of the Alpha Centauri Civil War!
