What Kind of Books do I Write? Romance, mystery, thrillers, historical, suspense? Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes. I guess you could say I write character-driven novels, both contemporary and historical. The majority of my books are love stories or family-life dramas. Magazine and blog reviewers often compare me to Nicholas Sparks (though I think my books have better endings). I also love to write suspense novels (more on that in a moment).

Even when writing my more inspirational books, I want to keep the pages turning. My goal, regardless of the book is for my readers to feel totally satisfied and thoroughly entertained when they’re done.

No Jekyll and Hyde – I put my 2 newest novels together here (both came out in 2015) to illustrate the different genres I write in . Obviously, WHEN NIGHT COMES is a suspense novel, while KEEPING CHRISTMAS is an inspirational Christmas story (it’s actually my 4th Christmas novel, 15th novel overall).

WHEN NIGHT COMES is my fourteenth book but my first true-suspense novel. Why have I just now started writing suspense novels? Have I grown tired of writing the kind of books I’m mostly known for? Have I stopped writing them altogether?

Absolutely not.

If it had been up to me I would have been writing both kinds of books all along. But traditional publishers frown on that. Many believe readers only read one genre, and that they only want to read books from their favorite authors written in that same genre.

I think most readers are like me - I love to read novels, too. But not always in the same genre. I have reading moods. I’ll read 2-3 books in one genre then move to a different genre for a season. Maybe I’ll go back to the first group for a while. The point is, I don’t only read one. And as a writer, I don’t like to write in only one. So, I decided to do an experiment last year and write WHEN NIGHT COMES as an indie book. It’s done very well, and I’ve gotten great feedback from readers urging me to keep it up.

So my plan, going forward, is to write both kinds of books. I have a brand- new drama coming out, hopefully by Thanksgiving, called RESCUING FINLEY. It’s written in my main genre, the first in a new trilogy. But I’m also 50 pages into writing Book 2 of the series that began with WHEN NIGHT COMES. I hope to release it in the spring or early summer, then keep the suspense series going.

KEEPING
CHRISTMAS

About KEEPING CHRISTMAS

For the first time since their children were born, empty nesters Judith and Stan Winters spent Thanksgiving without the kids, and it's looking like Christmas will be the same. Judith can't bring herself to even start decorating for the holiday; her kids always hung the first ornaments on the tree, ornaments they had made each year since they were toddlers. Sure they were strange-looking-- some could be called downright ugly--but they were tradition. A tradition she's heartbroken to miss this year.

With Judith refusing to decorate the bare spruce tree in their living room, Stan knows something must be done. And his only hope for saving the holiday is found in a box of handmade ornaments.

Fan-favorite Dan Walsh invites readers to enjoy this nostalgic Christmas story that celebrates all of our most cherished seasonal traditions, especially the importance of family. Readers will join in remembering the things that make their own Christmas season so special.

Re: Dan Walsh | Just What Genre Do I Write In?

I read almost any fiction.
(Marissa Yip-Young 10:03am October 9, 2015)

I enjoy fiction of all types and would read an author whose
books I enjoy in another genre.
(Sharon Berger 11:46am October 9, 2015)

There are so many types of books I like to read. Among them:
Contemporary romance
Historical Romance
Regency romance
Romantic suspense
Women's fiction
Cozy mysteries

Most of the books I read fall into these categories,
although I will occasionally read from another genre.

To answer the last question, yes, if I really liked an
author, I would take a chance and read something from them
that is different; I'm sort of doing that with an author who
primarily wrote gritty, violent westerns and later shifted
to romantic comedy type books.
(Edward Washington 11:57am October 9, 2015)

i read mosty romance book all Genre. cowboys, royal.
business men. cops
(Emily Stemp 1:08pm October 9, 2015)

I read a bit of everything and it is exciting when an author I
am fond of breaks into a new genre. Of course I give it a
try.
(G. Bisbjerg 2:12pm October 9, 2015)

I am an avid reader, however, I want my stories to be believable. Also filled with
suspense and humor
(Joy Isley 5:49pm October 9, 2015)

I like any type of books. I will read any book there is
and if my favorite author would write in a different genre,
I SURE WOULD read their books.
(Renae Kelly 6:35pm October 9, 2015)

I like to read any type of book, including nonfiction.
And, yes, if I like an author, I'm quite willing to take a
chance on their work in another genre.
(Deb Philippon 7:18pm October 9, 2015)

I remember how Christmas was when we were kids and now that the family has
grown up, we rarely see each other at Christmas. It seems to have become
phone calls instead of hugs and kisses
(Diane McMahon 9:34pm October 9, 2015)

I read lots of different genres. I seem to go in cycles in
which I read one type of book then move to another. And,
absolutely, I am willing to give an author I like a chance
in a different genre.
(LaRonda Atchison 11:37pm October 9, 2015)

I read a lot, this sounds like a good book.
(Wilma Frana 1:51pm October 10, 2015)

I read everything
(Alison Mckearney 3:25pm October 10, 2015)

I do not want to limit myself., If it interest me I will read
it.
(Debra Guyette 4:00pm October 10, 2015)

I read different genre's in both fiction and nonfiction. If
I love a writer's writing style, I will follow those
authors until I die. I like when an author surprises me and
switches a genre because it's now I find new genres to me.
(Val Pearson 6:24pm October 10, 2015)

I read pretty much anything, both Fiction and Nonfiction. The
only thing I'm not a huge fan of are self help books.
(Diana Thomas 10:58pm October 10, 2015)

i read all differnt genre's but mostly romance. I do like
to jump around as there are authors that i read and they
also do historical so i am there. Then some do fun
mystery I am there. I have a nerve disease so anything
that takes the pain away for a short time and keeps me
interested I am there. Now I am not a fan if self help
books I leave those to people are want to be drs.
(Peggy Clayton 12:30pm October 11, 2015)

My tastes are all over the map, when it comes to
reading. You hit the nail on the head when you said
that it depends on a readers' mood. I read anything
from Romance to Historical fiction, to memoirs, and
then some. About the only thing I haven't been able
to read yet are sci-fi books, since the ones that I've
tried to read I found to be a bit laughable. Since
the age of 3, I first learned to read, and always
loved the English language. That, in turn gave me the
love of the English language as well as books. I feel
it helps me to be a well-rounded reader, but can also
be a curse. When you read too many books, as I tend
to do, they tend to blur at times, and you can forget
at times which books were which. On the other hand, I
have read outstanding Authors whose books have stood
out in my mind and I'll never forget them. If they
switched up and wrote a different genre I would give
them a chance, and if I didn't like their book, I
wouldn't read another one. It's happened before, and
I had to drop them like a hot potato, which I hated to
do, but if you don't like the direction they took,
there's nothing you can do about it. I'm looking
forward to reading your latest book. Since my Father
passed away last year, Christmas will be a little
different for me. I'm sure that your book will be a
bright spot to fill the void. I enjoyed reading your
posting today, and apologize for the long response I
gave.
(Peggy Roberson 7:28am October 11, 2015)

I like suspense novels. I love to read, even the backs of cereal boxes so I would most definitely enjoy your book. I need a new book for myself and daughter to read...then we discuss it.
(Carole Abel 11:40am October 11, 2015)

Love that you write about everything. I love reading
contemporary but one in a while historical interests me. Love
to find authors that write both
(Karen Kane 1:53pm October 11, 2015)

I mostly read Christian Fiction. I don't like to stay with
one certain genre but Amish fiction is my favorite, but I
enjoy reading christian contemporary fiction, historical
fiction and christian suspense.
I have also started spreading my reading wings by reading
cozy mysteries.
I do like to read other genres other than what a writer
normally writes. Its interesting to read another side of
their creativity.
(Maryann Skaritka 2:15pm October 11, 2015)

I enjoy mixing it up
(Larena Hubble 7:38pm October 11, 2015)

I read all kinds of books ,fiction ,non-fiction ,whatever . Give me a book and I will read it . If it is not a " good " book ,I usually keep reading it ,in hopes that it will get better .
(Joan Thrasher 8:37pm October 11, 2015)

i prefer fiction, all kinds: historical, regency,
paranormal, chick lit, some mystery.
(Sandy Haber 8:38pm October 11, 2015)

I like to mix it up a lot. I enjoy reading a variety of genre.
(Kai Wong 8:40pm October 11, 2015)

I read books in lots of genres.
(Pam Howell 9:16am October 12, 2015)

Would love to read one of your books.
(Carole Abel 3:20pm October 12, 2015)

Mystery is my first choice and then romance and then I read all
genres except horror and sci-fi.
(Denise Austin 4:30pm October 12, 2015)

Oooh I like to read all types of genres, especially thrillers and suspense. Yes I would definitely read an author's book if it was written in a different genre than normal.
(Cheri Oggy 6:00pm October 12, 2015)

I read anything and everything!
(Richard Burr 8:50pm October 12, 2015)
