The Business Of Sex: An Interview With Ten Hot Romantic Suspense Authors Of DANGEROUS ATTRACTION
Q: The market for romance novels is going strong, with readers craving
everything from sweetheart romances to racy, erotica and anything in between. Do
you think readers will ever get their fill of the romance genre?
Sharon Hamilton: Is this a trick question? Of course not. If
anything, romance
is selling more and more each year as the genres blend and new creative stories
are being told, whetting readers' appetites.
Rebecca York: Of course
not. Women crave stories where the heroine gets what
she wants—a happy ending with a great guy.
Toni Anderson: I don't
think so. As a reader I'm still hooked after 20 years
(and more) of reading romance. The variety available today just ensures there's
something for everyone.
Kaylea Cross: I don't
think so—readers of romance love the genre. And come on,
we all love happy endings!
Q: You each have different levels of heat in your books. Why did you choose to
write at that level? Do you think you'll ever try a different heat level?
Debra Burroughs: My books are more intensely romantic than
sweetheart, but not
to the point of sex scenes. These are the types of books I enjoy reading and I
have found that there is a whole segment of readers that are just like me. I
believe I fill a certain niche, and I hear from readers all the time about how
much they love my stories and the real, heart-fluttering romance in them. I
don't ever see myself going to a hotter level. I don't think most of my fans
would appreciate that.
Kaylea Cross: I write
very spicy love scenes because I enjoy it, and also
because it allows me to fully describe the experience for both the characters. I
use my love scenes as plot and character development, not just for the sake of
writing sex.
Marie Astor: I choose the level of intensity based on the characters'
personalities, plot, and the level of heat that I enjoy as a reader. As a
reader, I prefer sex scenes not to be overly graphic and to leave a little
something to the imagination, and I generally follow the same principle in my
writing. That being said, if I ever get an idea for a sex thriller or an erotic
novel I might explore a whole new heat level.
Dana Marton: I choose
the heat level to match my characters. DEATHSCAPE has love
scenes, but they're not erotica. Ashley has been through so much, she really
needed some sweet and tender loving. That's exactly what Jack gives her. I'm
currently writing another book in the series, DEATHBLOW, where the hero is an ex
football player, total jock, small town playboy kind of guy. The heat is on a
whole different level.
Q: For those of you who write on the racier side of things, how do your family
and friends feel about that?
Lori Ryan: I turn a little red in the face when my mother-in-law
reads my books
but she doesn't bat an eye. She just shrugs and says "I've read worse."
Jill Sanders: All of my family members totally support me. My
husband works with
me full time doing my website, all my book covers, and all my promo graphics. My
teenage sons even help me with promotion items. My siblings are 100% behind me.
My twin sister, Jody, has been my rock since the first day. She's the reason I
put Finding Pride, my first book, up on Amazon a year ago. My older brother,
Danny, even helped me edit my first two books, and he doesn't read romance. My
father has sent me tons of books on how to write books and is very proud.
Everyone else in my very large family has been great in supporting me, no matter
the heat level I write, I know they will always be there.
Kaylea Cross: We don't
talk about it much. They're supportive of what I do, but
I write under a pen name for a reason. And I always joke that my DH is the head
of research and development .
Q: Tell us about your favorite book in this boxed set (written by someone other
than you!).
Toni Anderson: I'm a
big fan of military romance and love Sharon Hamilton's
FALLEN SEAL LEGACY. A hot hero and a psychopathic killer--what more could you
want :)?
Lori Ryan: I love DEATHSCAPE by Dana Marton. I immediately
connected with the
heroine as a mother and felt the pain she must have been going through in the
opening scenes. And the hero is to die for!
Dana Marton: I LOVE
Jill Sander's SECRET GUARDIAN. Hot sex under a waterfall...
What's not to love? Lol I really like fast-paced international intrigue, and
Jill delivers.
