Abe Moss | You’re Next meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers

What is the title of your latest release?
MORSELS

What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
MORSELS is essentially - You’re Next meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers in a supernatural “meet-the-family” horror romp about family dysfunction, childhood trauma, and the evil that festers in the basements of our past.

How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
There are few places scarier than your in-laws’ isolated summer vacation home out in the middle of the woods!

Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?
Absolutely. Connie is a badass. Her harrowing life experiences have given her a cool head and an open mind. Plus, I know she’d have my back if we ran into any supernatural shenanigans.

What are three words that describe your hero?
Resilient, determined, hopeful.

What’s something you learned while writing this book?
More than I ever wanted to know about surviving the loss of a limb.

Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
Definitely both! I reread yesterday’s work before writing today’s. Makes the actual editing phase much smoother.

What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Definitely all the ice cream. All kinds of ice cream. And gelato.

Describe your writing space/office!
My desk in the corner of my bedroom! With a wall calendar and a big whiteboard hanging over my desk for my notes and reminders.

Who is an author you admire?
Christopher Buehlman. His writing is exquisite, and it did not surprise me to learn what an extensive background he has writing poetry.

Is there a book that changed your life?
There are countless books that have inspired me in my horror writing, and countless others that have simply moved me in ways no other medium has. Ray Bradbury’s THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES is one.

Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published). Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
I decided to self-publish when I realized my (then) 3 finished novels weren’t doing me or anyone else any good sitting on my laptop waiting for an agent’s approval. I just wanted to share my stories with readers. That was over 7 years and nearly 30 books ago!

What’s your favorite genre to read?
Definitely horror. I read a lot of horror. I enjoy other genres as well, like sci-fi and fantasy. I also have a very soft spot for period romance. You give me a period romance horror novel and I’m in heaven.

What’s your favorite movie?
It’s a tie between Moulin Rouge! and Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

What is your favorite season?
Fall, easy. I love the Halloween season. I love sweater weather. I love the crunchy leaves all over and the breezy, rainy days.

How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
Lunch or dinner with family, and ice cream in some shape or form (especially if that shape or form is a cake).

What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
Something Very Bad is Going to Happen on Netflix. It’s been months now since I watched it and I still think about it regularly. It’s so good.

What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Indian food. I love some butter chicken or chicken tikka masala.

What do you do when you have free time?
Other than seeing movies and reading books, I’m also a big gamer. I love fighting games like Street Fighter and Guilty Gear and Tekken.

What can readers expect from you next?
More supernatural family dysfunction is always a safe bet with me.

MORSELS by Abe Moss

morsels

Meeting the family is scary. Surviving them is a nightmare.

A relentlessly fast-paced supernatural horror from a striking new talent that will have you reading late into the night and afraid to find who—or what—is staring right back.

Connie can’t deny she’s nervous about meeting her boyfriend’s family. Spending the weekend at their ritzy woodland summer home, Evan has already given her fair warning that his parents are cold, snobbish, and especially unpleasant toward those outside their usual social circles.

So when Evan’s mother warmly greets them with open arms, Connie is as confused as he is. Evan’s parents are nothing like he described.

They’re so friendly, in fact, Evan himself can hardly believe they’re real.
Then, while helping with dinner, Connie overhears strange noises coming from the basement—what almost sounds like voices calling out for help.

Connie doesn’t realize that once the door is opened, it can’t be closed. Or that once she descends those rickety steps into the darkness below . . . she may never see the light of day again.
