Gemma Morr | A British city girl escapes to her Wyoming family ranch and clashes with a rugged ex-rodeo cowboy

What is the title of your latest release?
UNTAMED HEART

What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
A British city girl escapes to her Wyoming family ranch and clashes with a rugged ex-rodeo cowboy, discovering that love, grit, and belonging might be a lot wilder (and hotter) than the life she left behind…

How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I saw the TV show, Yellowstone, in 2024 – and it reminded me of my own time on a dude ranch in Wyoming years ago as a child. I’m from the UK, so to me, Jackson Hole is the quintessential, beautiful cowboy town amongst the mountains – the perfect place to fall in love!

Would you hang out with your heroine in real life?
Yes! Lottie and her best friend, Hestia, are a mash up of the relationship I have with one of my closest friends. There are elements of us both in those characters, so I know we’d have a blast if we hung out.

What are three words that describe your hero?
Oh Cole! He’s such a cinnamon roll! But in three words - loyal, genuine and grounded.

What’s something you learned while writing this book?
That home isn’t necessarily a place, or where you’re from. It’s more emotionally rooted than that, so to me, home is a feeling – or even a person. In Untamed Heart, Lottie comes to recognize that the ranch and Wyoming are, and always have been, the place she’s called home – deep down.

Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
Both. I plan meticulously as I like my drafts to be as clean as possible, but I always go over my writing from the previous day/session before launching into new writing. That way I can make subtle edits or clean up typos, and get back into the same headspace as the character. When I’ve finished a draft I’ll read it through once and make small edits as I go, but it’s usually a fairly quick process and I’ll send it straight to my editor after that.

What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Fresh-baked chocolate cookies – no contest.

Describe your writing space/office!
I’m in the process of packing up to move house, so I’m in limbo right now! However – my new office will be a writing space and library to house my out-of-control book collection… I’ve chosen a deep, peaceful green for the walls and will have my favorite framed prints and paintings on the one wall not covered by books! I keep my desk tidy and clear – just my notebook, pen pot and laptop. Anything else becomes a distraction!

Who is an author you admire?
There are so many, but one of my favorites is Ali Hazelwood. Her voice feels like an old friend, one that you don’t see often enough but when you do, it feels like no time has passed. She is such a talent - her books make me laugh, cry and swoon every time - and one of the kindest, most generous authors out there - the first to lift up other authors and champion them. I’m in awe of her!

Is there a book that changed your life?
Northern Lights by Philip Pullman (The Golden Compass in the US). I came across it just as I’d started my psychology degree at university, and in that moment, I realized I was doing the wrong thing with my life – that I needed to work with books as incredible as that in some way. I did finish my degree but immediately got a job in the publishing as soon as I graduated. Amazingly, roughly 20 years later, as Head of Marketing at Penguin Random House Children’s in the UK, I was lucky enough to lead the marketing campaign for The Secret Commonwealth, the prequel to Northern Lights and worked with Philip Pullman. Full circle moment!

Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published). Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
I found out a day after my birthday – my agent emailed to say that I’d received an offer – but it turned out to be the first of three offers from different publishers. It felt completely surreal, as if it wasn’t really happening to me at all. There might have been a few tears!

What’s your favorite genre to read?
My first love is fantasy, in all its many forms. The Hobbit was one of the first books I read by myself, and I was utterly blown away by being transported to a place so wildly different to our own. Now, I read as much romance as fantasy.

What’s your favorite movie?
This is so tough! It rotates depending on my mood… but either Four Weddings and a Funeral, Dune or Twilight (for sheer nostalgia and vibes!)

What is your favorite season?
Fall. I love it when the summer heat dies away but often leaves blue skies against the turning trees, wearing cozy clothes again and it being totally acceptable to curl up on the couch with a book under a blanket!

How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
I’m not a party person, so usually something quiet but fun with my husband and two sons. On my last birthday we visited Arundel Castle. It’s about an hour from where I live in the UK, and very nearly 1,000 years old – and still partly a family home! I love history, so this was so fun – plus there was an amazing independent bookshop right outside the gates – perfect!

What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I’ve recently been rewatching Homeland, and everything from the acting to the character development and overarching plots are just genius. I particularly love the sheer volume of morally grey characters, and all the complexities that come with it – it’s totally gripping and feels SO real.

What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
I love so many types of cuisine, but Japanese or Thai are probably my favorite. Noodles all day long!

What do you do when you have free time?
The very real answer is that I truly don’t have much, as I have a day job as well as writing, and two young children – but in rare moments, I love listening to music and catching up with friends.

What can readers expect from you next?
The second Diamond Back Ranch book, RECKLESS VOW is next, followed by the beginning of a new paranormal romance series – Sacrifice Me. (Still cowboys, just not quite as you know them…)

UNTAMED HEART by Gemma Morr

From city lights to cowboy nights, Lottie's heart must choose between rugged charm and untamed desire. . .

Welcome to Diamond Back Ranch: the stunning, small-town series from Gemma Morr. Perfect for fans of Elsie Silver, Devney Perry, and B.K. Borison.

When Lottie Wright is laid off from her London law firm, and finds out that her banker boyfriend Kyle is cheating on her, she gets the hell out of dodge and straight on a plane to Jackson Hole. Her plan is to get back in the saddle at her family's ranch, the Diamond Back, on the edge of the Grand Teton National Park.

Drowning her sorrows in a Jackson Hole bar, she has a steamy encounter with a tempting cowboy named Cole, only to find out he's also employed at Diamond Back—meaning things must stay professional. Life at the ranch then throws shirtless bull-rider Beau into her path, whose cowboy skills are as daunting as they are dazzling.

Under the vast western skies and the majestic shadow of the Rocky Mountains, Lottie must take charge of her life, deciding who she wants to be and who will capture her heart.
