1--What is the title of your latest release?
THE BOOMERANG
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
THE BOOMERANG is a “Grisham meets Yellowstone” conspiracy/political thriller where the United States government is covering up the cure for cancer and a rogue chief of staff figures out the truth after learning his daughter has terminal cancer. In order to save her life, he blackmails the President to obtain the miracle medicine and flees to New Mexico where he and his family come under the protection of a ruthless John Dutton type land baron that the government is afraid of.
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
The story covers a lot of geographic ground, starting on a baseball field in Lick Skillet, Alabama and ending in the desert of New Mexico. The last third of the story takes place in and around Albuquerque, New Mexico. My wife spent much of her childhood in Albuquerque, and most of her stepfamily still lives there. The inspiration for Dale James’ stepfamily and many of the characters in the New Mexico theater of the story are inspired from my wife’s life.
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Yes, I would. Eli James can be a scoundrel but he’s also a scrapper and has a fun sense of humor.
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Smart. Cool. Manipulative.
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
That the Apache attack helicopter only holds two people. I had five people crammed into it in a scene in an early draft and had to revise the stanza to include a second more passenger-oriented copter.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I mostly wait until I’m done. When I start a session, I might edit a little of what I wrote the day before just to get the engine cranked, but that’s it.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Pizza.
9--Describe your writing space/office?
I have a cozy office at home that is just off our family room where I do most of my writing. It is barebones with a desk and a docking station for my laptop.
10--Who is an author you admire?
There are so many, but Michael Connelly is who jumps to mind first. So consistently awesome.
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
“The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne. The message that thoughts attract outcomes and to makes sure I am thinking about what I want (as opposed to what I don’t’ want) is something that I focus on daily.
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
I was driving to Birmingham to meet my wife for a doctor’s appointment for our daughter. I’d just completed some meetings in a case I was working on. My agent called me somewhere around Montgomery. When I got off the phone, I must admit to doing my best Ric Flair imitation several times. WOOOOOOOO!
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
Thrillers.
14--What’s your favorite movie?
Tough call, but probably Forrest Gump.
15--What is your favorite season?
Fall.
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
By eating a great dinner, steak or pizza, with my family.
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I loved “Landman,” Taylor Sheridan’s latest show. Great stuff and Billy Bob Thornton was awesome as always.
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
Tough call, but probably Italian. I love pizza, lasagna, spaghetti, etc. Heaven for me is stepping through the door to DePalma’s in Tuscaloosa.
19--What do you do when you have free time?
Love to read fiction, go to the beach, play golf, visit my sons in college, and watch awesome shows and movies.
20--What can readers expect from you next?
My next book, THE MEDIATOR, returns to my southern roots and features suspended trial lawyer, Max Ringo, who is trying to make a comeback as a mediator. Max is thrilled when she is assigned to mediate a high-profile divorce case that involves two of the most powerful people in town. But her excitement turns to terror when her estranged son is kidnapped by one of the parties and she is blackmailed to negotiate the terms of the settlement on his terms. Caught in a nightmare with the clock on her son’s life ticking, Max must use all of her skills and face down her demons to settle the case and save her son.
