Melissa De La Cruz | Three 2000s era starlets reunite twenty years later

1--What is the title of your latest release?

WHEN STARS ALIGN

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

Three 2000s era starlets reunite twenty years later–will their friendship hold up against all the secrets and betrayals of their youth?

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

The idea came first, so Hollywood was natural location for it.

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Of course! All three are fun, flawed and wonderful humans.

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

This applies to all three protagonists: Resilient. Talented. Loving.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

That the media landscape of the early 2000s was so harmful toward young, vulnerable women.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I edit as I draft.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

Sushi omakase.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

The Royal Tenenbaums style with Scalamandre Masai wallpaper, Hermes fringed fabric shades, 18th and 19th century collection of female portrait paintings, posters from my TV show, a portrait of Truman Capote gifted to me by a fellow writer, Eames womb chair and ottoman, fabulous marble topped standing desk, built in bookshelves made from African Wenge wood. But you cannot see any of it due to my several rolling racks of clothing that’s covered every space lol. So now my office looks like a closet. In my defense we are renovating!

10--Who is an author you admire?

So many! But my hero is Stephen King.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

Dune. My husband was the only guy I’d ever met who read all six original Dune books and was cute. Sold!

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

I was a computer consultant at a meeting. My phone rang and it was my agent. We were out on submission, so I knew it was good news. She told me S&S offered on my debut novel. It is the third happiest day of my life after my wedding and the birth of my child.

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Cooking memoirs.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

Moulin Rouge. I watched it five times in the theater.

15--What is your favorite season?

Summer forever.

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

With a huge party with hundreds of friends and hopefully a celebrity or two lol.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I loved Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

Chinese or Filipino. Honestly anything Asian. I never crave “American food.” I could eat only Asian food for my entire life and be happy.

19--What do you do when you have free time?

Watch trashy reality TV. Below Deck and Housewives are my jam.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

RINGS OF FATE - my first adult romantasy is out this September and I’m so so so excited for everyone to read it!

WHEN STARS ALIGN by Melissa De La Cruz

Three girls in Hollywood who thought they’d rule the world. Reality bites in a touching novel about success, friendship, and redemption by a New York Times bestselling author.

Best friends Miranda Montana, Germaine St. Germaine-Chang, and Sicily Bell were the darlings of Hollywood who rose from teen success to in-demand idols of screaming fans and paparazzi. They rode the momentum like there was no tomorrow. But nothing lasts forever.

Now Miranda, the wild-child movie star, drifts from rehab to dead-end relationships as she tries for a comeback from a very public fall from grace. Germaine, the daughter of billionaire hotel moguls, has lost her purpose. And then there’s Sicily, the all-American pop star who had a record deal, sold-out concerts, and controlling parents who squeezed the very life out of her. After a decade, fate reconnects these three young women for a long-awaited confrontation with the secrets, betrayals, heartbreak, and family traumas of the past.

Settling old scores is just the beginning. It’s also time to repair the damage done and to hold fast to the most galvanizing success of their lives: their friendship.
