1--What is the title of your latest release?
THE SUMMER GUESTS
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
"The Martini club," a group of retired spies in Maine, teams up with the local police chief to investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl. When the pond is dragged, looking for the girl's body, they instead drag up the decades-old remains of a young woman.
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
The town of Purity, Maine, is a fictionalized version of my own hometown, where we have quite a few retirees who once worked for the CIA.
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Oh, yes. I love my Martini Club characters and wish I could hang out with them and hear gossip about their spying days!
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Maggie Bird: Smart. Resourceful. Loyal.
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
I learned about MKULTRA, the CIA's research program during the 1950s-70s, which tested various psychoactive drugs on human guinea pigs - some of whom were unaware they were being drugged.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I wait until I'm completely done with the first draft and then go back and edit.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Where do I start? Boozy indulgences: good whisky and vodka martinis. Food indulgences: sushi, oysters, and French fries.
9--Describe your writing space/office!
It's a huge space over my garage, with a view over the ocean, where I can watch eagles and seagulls.
10--Who is an author you admire?
Barbara Kingsolver and Margaret Atwood.
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
The Nancy Drew books -- when I was seven years old. They inspired me to become a storyteller.
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
It was a puzzling call -- the editor called to ask me if I was fine with their proposed date of publication. I didn't even know my book had been accepted because my agent notified me by mail and I hadn't received his letter yet! (I was living in Hawaii then, and there was no such thing as email.)
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
English cozies (at the moment.)
14--What’s your favorite movie?
This may sound silly, but the one movie I play every New Year's is "Galaxy Quest." It makes me laugh every time.
15--What is your favorite season?
Summertime in Maine. I can be found in my garden most of the time.
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
Quietly. With dinner out.
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I LOVED the television series "Foyle's War" and was so sad when it ended.
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
No favorites. I love them all.
19--What do you do when you have free time?
Read. Garden. Travel. Cook.
20--What can readers expect from you next?
The third book in the Martini Club series, THE SHADOW FRIENDS. My character Ingrid Slocum's life is turned upside down when a former lover (and ex-colleague) pops back into her life, threatening her marriage and her hopes for a quiet retirement.

Readers of The Spy Coast will recall that when former spy Maggie Bird retired to Purity, she settled in with her chickens to live a quiet life. But enemies from her past soon threatened to destroy everything. Maggie survived, thanks to her wits and the collective intelligence of the Martini Club, the circle of ex-CIA friends in her cocktail-sipping book club. Their handiwork, however, caught the attention of young police chief Jo Thibodeau. Now Jo and her neighborhood ex-spies have an uneasy alliance. After a teenager vanishes—and Maggie’s neighbor becomes the prime suspect—she joins the investigation, determined to prove her friend’s innocence. But the girl’s wealthy family pushes for an arrest. And when authorities discover a long-dead corpse in a nearby pond, the case becomes doubly complicated, with unthinkable ties to the area’s long-buried secrets. As Jo attempts to solve two mysteries by following the rules, the Martini Club turn to their arsenal of spy skills to uncover the truth.

Internationally bestselling author Tess Gerritsen took an unusual route to a writing career. A graduate of Stanford University, Tess went on to medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, where she was awarded her M.D.
While on maternity leave from her work as a physician, she began to write fiction and in 1987, her first novel, Call After Midnight, was published. It was just the first of 32 suspense novels that she’s written over a 36-year writing career. She also wrote a screenplay, "Adrift," which aired as a 1993 CBS Movie of the Week starring Kate Jackson.
Tess's first medical thriller, Harvest, was released in hardcover in 1996, and it marked her debut on the New York Times bestseller list. Her novels have hit bestseller lists ever since. Among her titles are Gravity, The Surgeon, Vanish, Listen to Me, and The Spy Coast. Her books have been translated into 40 languages, and more than 40 million copies have been sold around the world.
Her series of novels featuring homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles inspired the hit TNT television series "Rizzoli & Isles," starring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander.
Now retired from medicine, she writes full time. She lives in Maine.
