Debra Parmley | Tales From the Trailer: The Many Ways We’ve Traveled

websitegoodreadsfacebook

The ways we have traveled with our motorhome have changed in the years since 2020 when we began living our on the road adventure. One question we’re often asked is, what do you do with your car, or truck/do you pull it or drive it? Or a variation of this question. We’ve tried several ways.

The day we drove away in our new motorhome to start our adventure, my husband drove the motorhome while I drove my convertible behind him. It’s a different feeling driving away from your old land-based house while following your new home drive down the road. I felt like I was chasing it but never catching up and wanted to be in there with him, going down the road. Since then, I’ve only driven behind him when necessary.

Everything we owned was either inside the motorhome or in a storage unit. Our house sold seven days after we listed it, my husband closed his business on a Friday and moved all business equipment and office things into a storage unit the following day. It would take more time to downsize everything.  We would return to finish that process. In the meantime, we were headed down the road.

After this first start, we purchased a tow dolly to pull my car behind us. When you live in a 43-foot bus (same size as a tour bus for musicians) taking it to the grocery store parking lot every time you need a few things isn’t practical. I was thrilled to be able to still drive my car. We even took it down to Daytona Beach so we could drive the convertible on the beach. Now my car is in storage because I’m attached to it, but we won’t tow it again because that left black marks and damage on the white paint of the front of the car. Another lesson learned. We parked it, took it off the road, and purchased a new truck.

We switched to flat towing with a Blue Ox tow bar. Our Chevy Colorado is hooked right behind the motorhome and must be put into neutral. Any truck you use must be towable. Some are not, without modification.

The truck has allowed us to see places out west we wouldn’t have driven my car, such as the ghost town of Kirwin, 40 miles outside Meeteetse, WY, which is a rough and bumpy drive across wet and dry creek beds and up and down steep grades requiring four-wheel drive. It is only accessible at certain times of year.

We like our new tow set up and being able to go off road on adventures in the truck.

Now that I’ve answered the question of how we travel down the road with a vehicle behind us, I want to share our most recent trip which was on a cruise ship!

In February we spent five days aboard the Valiant Lady, a Virgin Voyages cruise ship, for the first Love Lit Cruise sailing the Caribbean with stops on Grand Turk and Bimini. This is an intimate event where readers and authors can spend time getting to know each other and sharing our love of books and travel. It was the best reader/author event I have ever attended, fully ADA, and I made wonderful new friendships which I treasure.

My husband and I also celebrated our 44th wedding anniversary onboard, the last night of the cruise. We packed a lot into five days and now we are home again, unpacked, and I’m writing a brand-new story inspired by our time on the cruise! I even wrote the first page onboard in the middle of my busy schedule.

The first scene I’ve written is set on the island of Grand Turk which is where the story began in my imagination. The heroine is in danger and it’s the first time the hero sees her. You will find this occurs in many of my books as it is how the heroine often first appears to me. The hero is a SEAL, and this will be the fourth book in my Green Brotherhood SEAL Team XII series. Untitled as it is that new!

In the meantime, while you are waiting on me to finish writing book four, the first three stories, Finding Bryce; Real Movie Hero; and Saving the Bellydancer, novellas which are available individually or in a box set of all three, The Green Brotherhood: SEAL Team XII, trilogy #1 is a good place to begin. My SEAL team is set in the Virginia Beach area where we lived for several months last year, as I researched and met with my advisor, retired SEAL Bill Hellman.

I’ll let you know more as the new story progresses. I’ve been on fourteen cruises now, but this is the first time I was inspired by a story idea set on the very cruise and island I was on and able to start writing the story while on the ship. I’m thrilled about this!

If you have questions about our fulltime motorhome lifestyle, send me an email and they may appear in a future Tales from the Trailer article.

I’m wishing you happy reading and a beautiful day, until next time, when I return with more Tales from the Trailer.

THE GREEN BROTHERHOOD: SEAL TEAM XII TRILOGY by Debra Parmley

Green Brotherhood: SEAL Team XII #4

A Box Set

The first three books in the Green Brotherhood: SEAL Team XII series are highlighted in this first trilogy of the series.

In Finding Pippa, Diesel must find the woman of his dreams and his son.

In Real Movie Hero, Reed must stop a live shooter in a movie theater.

In Saving the Bellydancer, Cutter must save his new girlfriend from a live shooter.

Finding Pippa:

Pippa hid the truth to protect her child... and herself.

She may have left her abusive ex-husband, but she can never fully escape him. While he is safely behind bars, she indulges in one night of passion with a handsome stranger... and ends up pregnant.

Now, she lives in fear that there will be hell to pay if her ex finds out.

Tanner "Diesel" Taylor takes his responsibilities to his family and as a SEAL seriously. Yet he never saw himself getting married and settling down.

While the night he spent with Pippa was amazing, they left the masquerade party only knowing each other as a masked gladiator and a woodland fairy.

Now, two years later, he learns they share a son.

Unfortunately, Tanner's arrival on her doorstep to meet Bryce comes too late. Released from prison, her vicious ex abducts both mother and son. Armed with his vast training, Deisel will stop at nothing to get them back.

Pippa has no idea the SEAL is on his way. Trapped with her enraged ex, can Pippa keep herself and her child safe until help arrives?
