1--What is the title of your latest release?
AND THEY HAD A GREAT FALL
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
For fans of Robinne Lee’s The Idea of You, a debut contemporary romance about a celebrity and a single mother who push and pull against each other as they teeter between a carrying on a secret affair and living an authentic life.
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I really believe the location can be its own character. The setting of Copenhagen was selected because it reflected my couple – Kat and Jake. Kat and Jake are what I call a Monday/Friday couple. Kat is all business, practical and controlled. She’s not grumpy, but she certainly has little time for frivolity and does not take risks. Jake is the exact opposite – he’s fun and takes life in the moment. He’s not all sunshine, but he believes life is one big exploration. At times they spar because they can’t really understand each other, but at other times, the very reason they are attracted to each other is their differences. Copenhagen was a very intentional choice because Danish design is all about Form and Function, which reflects Jake and Kat. It is a subtle reminder that you can have both and build something beautiful.
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
This is such a great question. I’d love nothing more than to sit in a cozy café with coffee and cinnamon rolls and chat with both Kat and Jake.
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Kat: Steady, Capable and Practical
Jake: Charm, Chaos and Unpredictable
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
Since writing is not my #1 and I spend my “day job” as a CEO of a media company, I learned that you can do a lot of things in the “fringes” of your day. I would never have though I had time to write and craft this novel, but you can pursue a passion in 20-minute increments.
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
A little bit of both. If I have a scene I want to get right – something important to the rest of the novel, I will spend extra time editing and getting that scene right. That said, I don’t edit everything as I go because sometimes, I just need to get the flo
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
I am a sweets person. So I love all things cake, cookies, cheesecake – really all desserts.
9--Describe your writing space/office!
Honestly, I do most of my writing on the Metra (commuter train), airplanes and hotel lounge.
10--Who is an author you admire?
I have been on a Curtis Sittenfeld kick lately. I love that she writes with a sense of realism.
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
So, I won’t name the title, but I read a rom-com book and it frustrated me so much. It was so unrealistic and unrelatable. I am sure many readers want that as an escape, but it didn’t resonate with me. After reading it, I set up to write a romance book I wanted to read. And here we are….
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.
I was flying home from a business trip when I got the email. It was surreal because there I was in row 14, so excited … by myself.
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
Contemporary romance. I have been reading a lot of YA too. My teenage daughter and I share a TBR, which is my favorite thing.
14--What’s your favorite movie?
Elf
15--What is your favorite season?
I love fall. Living in the Midwest, the change of seasons is a beautiful time of year.
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
With a lot of cake.
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
I’ve been loving The Pitt and White Lotus
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
I love food overall. So, everything and especially dessert.
19--What do you do when you have free time?
What’s that? Just kidding. You can usually find me watching my daughter compete at a swim meet, water polo match or triathlon. When I am relaxing, I love snuggling with my dogs on the couch.
20--What can readers expect from you next?
I am working on a prequel. I am not done with Kat’s story.

A Novel
For fans of Robinne Lee’s The Idea of You, a debut contemporary romance about a celebrity and a single mother who push and pull against each other as they teeter between a carrying on a secret affair and living an authentic life.
If Jake Laurent is the “human equivalent of Friday,” Kat Green is “Monday.” Nevertheless, the two shared a secret (if casual) affair during the pandemic, and now, almost exactly one year later, they’ve reunited in Copenhagen, the “city of fairy tales.” Only neither one of them is living a fairy tale.
Jake is a young actor who’s cracking under the public pressure that comes with rising celebrity. Kat is a single mother at the top of her career who believes she’s holding it all together but is barely living. Each one is a simple escape for the other—until the security Kat has worked so hard to build for her tiny family comes under threat, and Jake has to decide if he can keep Kat a secret even if it’s at the expense of his own fame.
And They Had a Great Fall is the story of two people who are going through the motions in life—until they finally look inside themselves to figure out what it takes to find a happily ever after.

She’s spent the last twenty-five years at Publicis Media, where she’s focused on media investment—how advertising space is bought and sold. When not at her computer, Shelby can be found in the cafes of Chicago and Elmhurst, IL, or hanging at home with her husband, Scott, teenage daughter, three dogs, and one mean cat.
