Kimberli A. Bindschatel | Conversations in Character with Poppy McVie

Book Title: OPERATION BAYOU JUSTICE

Character Name: Poppy McVie

How would you describe your family or your childhood?

It was, well, different. My mother was a surgeon in the Navy, and my dad was a wildlife photographer, so we moved around a lot. In the Philippines, I learned to street fight when I was eight. Mostly, though, I learned to live out of a backpack and appreciate the wilderness. Oh, and I put myself through college working as a sommelier. Yeah, I’m kinda into wine.

What was your greatest talent?

Getting in trouble, if that’s a talent. No wait, maybe getting myself out of a pickle. Yeah, that’s happened a lot. I’m kind of a jump-feet-first-figure-it-out as I go kind of gal. But seriously, I tend to see things others don’t. Like, I can read people, their vibe, you know.

Significant other?

I have this on again off again thing with my partner, Dalton, another agent on the force. He’s so…aggravating. And sexy.  And aggravating. He’s serious about our relationship and I’m…do we have to talk about this right now?

Biggest challenge in relationships?

I do this thing where I open my mouth and stuff comes out, and then I regret it. And sometimes I can be so focused on catching the bad guys, I kinda forget about my friends’ birthdays. Lucky my best friend Chris gets me.

Where do you live?

Hm, since I’m always undercover, I keep paying for this one room apartment that’s pretty much empty. Come to think about it, I should do something about that.

Do you have any enemies?

Anyone who harms animals. You even think about it, and I’m coming for you.

How do you feel about the place where you are now? Is there something you are particularly attached to, or particularly repelled by, in this place?

Right now, I’m stuck in the Louisiana bayou with a perp named Earl who is particularly good at getting under my skin. The heat doesn’t help. I mean, damn it’s hot in the bayou. But Earl is a real piece of work. He’s a two-bit criminal who has made a plea deal to help us bust a kingpin. But I’m not sure he could find his way out of a paper bag.

Do you have children, pets, both, or neither?

If I wasn’t always undercover, I’d have a dog. Or two. Or maybe more. But no exotic pets. I go after criminals who traffic in illegal animals. Wild animals belong in the wild.

What do you do for a living?

I’m an agent with US Fish & Wildlife. Right now, I’m serving undercover on a Presidential Animal Task force. I make a living, but it’s really a calling for me. My mother nags me to do something suitable, like work at a non-profit in DC, not dodging bullets, as she puts it. But I like being in the field.

Greatest disappointment?

My dad died when I was a young teen, killed by poachers, and I wish I could’ve… well, been there. I could’ve helped or saved him. I don’t know.

Greatest source of joy?

Slapping handcuffs on a poacher. It’s pretty darn gratifying.

What do you do to entertain yourself or have fun?

When I’m not working, hmm, I like snorkeling, white-water rafting, sailing, paragliding, and backcountry hiking.

What is your greatest personal failing, in your view?

I act before I think things through. Impulsive. At least that’s what they say. I just go with my gut more than most I suppose.

What keeps you awake at night?

Wildlife crime. It’s a multi-billion-dollar transnational criminal activity that is decimating many endangered species around the world. Illegal profits are eclipsed only by drug trade, arms trade, and human trafficking, and help fund those organized crime syndicates. It’s an awful reality that most people don’t want to think about, but Dalton and I are on the case.

OPERATION BAYOU JUSTICE by Kimberli A. Bindschatel

Poppy McVie #8

Sinister men haunt a Louisiana swamp…

…ravaging the wilds, leaving the foul muck of death in their wake.

Tracking them feels like hunting a ghost.

Special Agents Poppy McVie and Dalton are deep undercover with Earl, a two-bit offender, and his pack of good ‘ol boys, trying to lure the crime boss. When he finally shows his face, Poppy can’t believe her eyes. The long, cold reach of a Mexican cartel boss she’d busted long ago has come back to haunt her. Poppy, once again, teams up with Charity Styles and the elite Armstrong group, but soon finds herself in the crosshairs of a stone-cold killer.

If you love Lara Croft and Indiana Jones movies, and love Nevada Barr, this book is for you. Find out why readers describe Poppy as “My hero!” and “Irresistible.”
