Debra Parmley | Tales from the Trailer

websitegoodreadsfacebook

Happy New Year everyone! I’m multi-genre author Debra Parmley, and I write while living the RV lifestyle full-time with my husband. I’m excited to bring you “Tales from the Trailer” a new feature on Fresh Fiction where each month I’ll be sharing stories of our travels and the RV lifestyle from an author’s point of view.

For 23 years we had lived in Bartlett, TN just outside Memphis and we had talked about getting an RV and traveling more when he retired from his pressure washing business. Then Covid changed things in the US, and I said, “What are we waiting for? Everything is shut down anyway. If we must stay home, why not do that in a home on wheels? We can just move the home and go see national parks and our beautiful country. Let’s sell the house, buy an RV and go.” So, we did.

By October 2020 we had bought the RV, a 2010 Tiffin Allegro diesel bus, parked it at our house, and started moving things into it while I worked on downsizing everything in our house.  When we put our house on the market, it sold 6 days after we listed it with two bidders raising the price beyond our asking price. A great time to sell. We closed Nov. 20th,they took immediate possession, and we got on the road ready for the biggest adventure of our lives.

One of our fun early stays, in Jan. 2021 was at Parkers Crossroads RV Park, in Yuma, TN where our backyard was a cow pasture. A feeder farm, there were about 500 head of cattle behind us. This is the view from our bedroom window where the cattle made noise to wake me up.

We weren’t far from the Tennessee Safari Park, and I love animals, so I was excited to go there. The brochure listed 43 animals you could drive through to see and feed with many more in the walking zoo. We bought three plastic pails of feed and headed in. The animals come right up to your car, so you roll down your windows and feed them. None were shy. We had food and they wanted it!

Camels slobbered all over my hands and the car window. One tried to get the bucket, and his lip came down over my finger, then I felt his teeth and shrieked, dropping my full bucket! My husband laughed so hard I think he had more fun watching me than watching the animals. Good thing we bought three buckets. It was my turn to laugh when he sunk his teeth onto my husband’s bucket and yanked it out of his hands.

It was fun to feed camels, llamas, ostriches, alpacas, and the giraffe.

As the years have progressed, seeing animals on our travels has become one of my favorite things.

I have many more tales to share, some from our big “go west” trip – a 109-day trip cross country from Ohio to the California redwoods, and back to Memphis. Some from our summer season on a sandbar in the Atlantic. Some from our season in Cody, Wyoming at the foot of Yellowstone National Park.

As our adventures began in Bartlett, TN this month I’d like to share CHECK OUT, which is book one in the Bobbins sister’s trilogy. Set in Bartlett, TN with a Bartlett librarian named Betsy, and a Marine veteran hero, Check Out is military romantic suspense.

CHECK OUT by Debra Parmley

When Nash, a Marine returning home with an injury, who is rebuilding his life, walks into the library where shy librarian Betsy Bobbin works, she’s intimidated by the handsome man who wears an eye patch and an attitude. But when her car has a flat in the library parking lot as she’s leaving work during a winter storm, the mysterious Marine comes to her rescue. He comes to her rescue again when Betsy and her less mature younger sister Leann have trouble at a local country western bar with a drunk who won’t leave Leann alone. But the fight outside the bar between an angry Nash and the drunk frightens Betsy. She’s fallen for the recovering war veteran, but is it safe to fall for a man with PTSD? Betsy is torn.

Will love and trust win out over her fear before it is too late?

Nash has found the girl of his dreams, but his wounds run deep. His ex-fiancé was repulsed by his eye patch and his scars, and manufactured drama like bees do honey. He’s sworn off of women and their drama and is keeping his focus on restoring a one hundredth anniversary 2003 Harley Davidson Road King and on the college classes he is taking. Meeting Betsy at the library, he’s drawn to the sweet, shy librarian and she brings out his protective instincts. If only her sister would stop getting in the way. Real drama surrounds Betsy, when a stalker comes after her sister Leann. The girls learn that stalking is a real problem on college campuses when Leann’s tutor stalks her. When Leann's college stalker shows up in town Betsy again turns to Nash.

This military romance with a touch of suspense features a Marine veteran hero with PTSD, a shy college librarian heroine, her younger less mature sister and a college campus stalker.
