1--What is the title of your latest release?

THE MASQUERADING TWIN

2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?

You’ve been on the run for years after killing your twin sister in a police raid gone wrong. Your past just returned, and it seems to be wearing the same face as yours. That’s impossible, right?

3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?

Since THE MASQUERADING TWIN is the fifth book in the series, it was inevitable that it would take place in Minnesota. This book visits several towns along the Mississippi River.

4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?

Yes! Selina is mysterious but also kind, easy to talk to, determined, and likes to have fun with her friends.

5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?

Determined, intelligent, exhausted.

6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?

I learned a lot about the hierarchy of the mafia and just how wrong authors get it when writing books about them. I also learned just how difficult it is to bury your past and become someone else without the help of witness protection.

7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

I write the first draft all the way through and then let it sit for about a month. Once I’ve had time to be away from it for a little while, I go back and do my first edit, where I find all the plot holes, fix anything that I had made notes within the manuscript to check, etc. Then, I read it through to see if it all gels together. If anything feels off, I try to decide why or walk away from it again for a few weeks while I work out what I need to do to bring the story together.

8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?

I actually don’t eat food. I’m completely tube-fed because of a disease called gastroparesis, meaning my stomach no longer grinds or digests food. That means all my nutrition comes through a liquid formula much like an infant formula, just made for adults.

9--Describe your writing space/office!

I will write anywhere I have a computer! I’m not picky about my writing area, probably because I had three kids at home and no extra space to use as just an office when I started writing. My office now has an old table from my husband’s school that they were getting rid of that I use as my desk, a comfy desk chair, my printer, a big bookshelf, and my TV so I can have Hallmark movies on while I write (my dog insists!). All I need is a quiet, comfortable place to write, and I’m happy.

10--Who is an author you admire?

BJ Daniels. I admire how many years she’s written for Harlequin and that her books remain fresh and fun to read even all these years later. She’s always an auto-read, auto-buy for me.

11--Is there a book that changed your life?

Yes, but I won’t list the title or author because it was a book I wouldn’t recommend as a person with a disability. The reason it changed my life, though, was that it was so terribly inaccurate that it sent me on a search for a romance novel with an accurate representation of people with disabilities. I couldn’t find one. That was when I decided I had to write one myself if I wanted to fix the problem, so that’s what I did. (This was 2011, so it wasn’t common to see a lot of disability representation in romance, and what was there, was always inaccurate.)

12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)/Or, for indie authors, when you decided to self-publish.

My editor at the time contacted me via email and asked if she could call so we could talk about Going Rogue in Red Rye County, which is the first book in this series, and was meant to be a standalone book. I figured if she was going to pass on the manuscript, she would just say that in the email, so I was excited to chat with her about the book, thinking that even if she wanted me to rewrite it, it was worth a discussion. Obviously, she was calling to buy the manuscript, but I have the article here if you’d like to read everything about how it came to be: https://www.writeforharlequin.com/i-got-the-call-meet-new-harlequin-intrigue-author-katie-mettner/

13--What’s your favorite genre to read?

Romantic suspense, which for me is mostly Intrigue, thrillers, or police procedurals, but I also read some contemporary romance.

14--What’s your favorite movie?

This is an easy one for me as someone who loves romance and Christmas. The Holiday!

15--What is your favorite season?

Late autumn but I also love winter. I like the cooler temps, the shorter days, and the early nights. People think that’s so weird, but I despise summer with the passion of ten thousand suns LOL I really don’t like being hot.

16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

My birthday is the day before my husband’s, so we always celebrate it together since he’s a teacher and often done with school by then. Since it’s June, and usually not too hot out yet, we go up the north shore of Lake Superior and stay near the Canadian border for a few nights to enjoy the lakeshore.

17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?

I love a podcast called Casefile Episodes and The Categorically Romance Podcast. Tulsa King has been a great series, but we also love Dark Winds. My favorite book series is The Josie Quinn Series by Lisa Regan and The Tennessee Cold Case Stories by Lena Diaz.

18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?

See question #8

19--What do you do when you have free time?

I love to crochet, bake, and hang out with my husband, puppy, and my three kids when they’re in town.

20--What can readers expect from you next?

Next month, the final book in The Secure One Series, HOLIDAY UNDER WRAPS, will be released. Then, in 2025, the spin-off series, The Secure Watch Series, will begin releasing in June. I will also be releasing several indie titles next year, so feel free to follow me on Facebook or sign up for my newsletter to stay connected!
