Welcome to Chance, Massachusetts!
Hi! I’m Sofie Rinaldi, and my father owns and runs Fortune Diner. I grew up in this space, always smelling burgers, fries, duck confit hash, and seafood gumbo. Dad has a thing for experimenting with cuisine from various countries and regions, as well as giving the customers something they haven’t tasted before. We even live in the apartment upstairs. I may be biased, but everyone would in town loves his food, and he has the best coffee.
Once called Sawdust Creek, we were in need to some improvement after the lumber and textile factories went under. The owner of the general store suggested Mayor Davenport put in for a bid for a casino. I knew our chances (no pun intended) were slim. No one had heard of our dusty corner of the world, but some of the residents were excited. This was five years ago.
The bid was turned down, but that didn’t stop our mayor or the town. They took it upon themselves to turn every business into a place that would attract tourists. The brick and stucco buildings were painted white, the names were changed, like Fortune and Karma Cuts, the local beauty salon. There are a ton of green banners and signs, gold lettering, some rainbows with pots of gold, a leprechaun or two, and four-leaf clovers galore. On top of this, the town has managed to keep its small-town feel with its mostly one-story buildings, lots of potted trees along the sidewalks, and a town center that appears cozy and not stark. And even the streets were renamed. Most of them are green, like Olive Street, Sage Road, and Fern Lane.
Dad had everything in Fortune changed from the green seating and server aprons to the giant island counter in the middle of the diner. Once standard shape, it now looks like a giant horseshoe.
Clover Condominiums was built, as well as rental cabins along the north side of the lake. The town organized seasonal events centered around our new luck theme, like a St. Patrick's Day parade, a horseshoe throwing competition, and an annual raffle with the major prize of a new car. Soon enough, people started visiting, and our dusty little town became synonymous with good luck and making wishes. There's even a coin fountain near the middle of town.
But there’s more to Chance than just its aesthetics. Again, I’m biased, but after a lightning storm three months ago, I could suddenly say a rhyme and have things happen. Like magic. Ssshh, don’t tell anyone. I don’t want word to get out and then I become a tourist attraction. Let’s just leave that secret between us.
So, when you visit Chance, come to Fortune Diner, ask for Sofie, and tell me what you need or desire when you order. You never know, your luck may change.
