1--What is the title of your latest release?
ROBERT LUDLUM’S THE BOURNE SHADOW
2--What’s the “elevator pitch” for your new book?
When Jason Bourne meets a stranger who recognizes him from his forgotten past, he's forced into a labyrinth of lies and betrayal. At the end of the maze is the truth about how he became the man he is.
3--How did you decide where your book was going to take place?
I like to use destinations I love and make terrible things happen there!
4--Would you hang out with your protagonist in real life?
Hmmm, hang out with Jason Bourne? No, I don’t think so. Too many people are trying to kill him.
5--What are three words that describe your protagonist?
Skilled. Passionate. Conflicted.
6--What’s something you learned while writing this book?
Life really does imitate art. The political backdrop of the novel is a French election in which a fringe right-wing group is scheming to take power. Does that sound familiar?
7--Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?
I’m always editing! I edit as I go, and I edit when I’m done. Editing is part of the writing process because it immerses me in the story each day.
8--What’s your favorite foodie indulgence?
Hard to beat a grilled ribeye steak.
9--Describe your writing space/office!
Well, since my wife and I moved to Florida, I do most of my writing outside. There’s something about the fresh air that really drives creativity. I sit at a desk under an umbrella looking out at a small lake…and the alligators. They do their thing, and I do mine.
10--Who is an author you admire?
There are so many! Can I admit it’s Robert Ludlum? He revolutionized the thriller genre almost single-handedly during his lifetime. I’m so honored to be carrying on his legacy.
11--Is there a book that changed your life?
TRINITY by Leon Uris taught me the risks an author can take in his narrative. Spoiler alert: The book is told in a first-person narrative, and he kills the narrator at the end. It’s so profoundly moving and unexpected.
12--Tell us about when you got “the call.” (when you found out your book was going to be published)
That was twenty years ago! But oh, man, I still remember that e-mail from my agent in London that we had an offer in hand. I’d been waiting my whole life for that moment.
13--What’s your favorite genre to read?
It’s a little scary, but I can’t really read my own genre anymore! After writing suspense all day, curling up with someone else’s favorite suspense novel feels a little like work. So I mostly read nonfiction – history, biographies, memoirs.
14--What’s your favorite movie?
Tough call, but I’m going to go with ROAD TO PERDITION. Dark and tragic, but such an amazing combination of acting, cinematography, and music.
15--What is your favorite season?
In Florida? All of them.
16--How do you like to celebrate your birthday?
Did I mention grilled ribeye steaks?
17--What’s a recent tv show/movie/book/podcast you highly recommend?
Readers should definitely discover Dave Temple and THE THRILLER ZONE. He’s a great interviewer, and he finds the perfect books to add to your TBR pile.
18--What’s your favorite type of cuisine?
I like ’em all, but I’ll say Asian.
19--What do you do when you have free time?
Free time? What’s that?
20--What can readers expect from you next?
My next stand-alone BREAK EVERY RULE arrives in just a few weeks – September 10. Then Bourne is back again in January in THE BOURNE VENDETTA. Check out all of my books on my website.
Bourne #19
When secrets from Bourne's past come to light, he may be the next thing that's buried in this latest entry in the legendary New York Times bestselling series.
It's been over a decade since Nash Rollins recruited a brilliant, talented, but disaffected young man named David Webb to join Treadstone. Webb became the agent known as Cain—and later took on the identity of Jason Bourne.
That violent winter—which included Cain’s first mission for Treadstone—was also a story of betrayal in ways that David never knew. So after the injury that erased Bourne’s whole life, Nash lied about the circumstances of David’s recruitment to Treadstone. He was afraid that learning the truth might drive Bourne out of the agency forever.
But now, when Bourne meets a woman who recognizes him as David Webb, the secrets of those days begin to come out—and Bourne is forced to confront the dangerous ghosts of a past he doesn’t even remember.

Brian Freeman is a bestselling author of psychological thrillers, including the Jonathan Stride and Cab Bolton series. Since 2005, he has sold books in 46 countries and 20 languages. His stand-alone novel SPILLED BLOOD won the award for Best Hardcover Novel in the International Thriller Writers Awards, and his novel THE BURYING PLACE was a finalist for the same award. Other winners of this award have included authors Stephen King, John Sandford, and Jeffery Deaver. His debut thriller, IMMORAL, won the Macavity Award and was a finalist for the Dagger, Edgar, Anthony, and Barry awards for Best First Novel. IMMORAL was also chosen as International Book of the Month by book clubs around the world. His novel THE BONE HOUSE was named a finalist for Best Audiobook of the Year in Thriller/Suspense. He is a three-time finalist for the Minnesota Book Award in his home state. His books have been chosen for special promotions by the American Booksellers Association, the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association, and the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance. Freeman’s writing has been praised by critics and bestselling authors alike, including Michael Connelly, Lisa Gardner, and Nelson DeMille. “My discovery this year has been crime writer Brian Freeman,” wrote the Daily Mail in its review of THE BURYING PLACE. “Fleshed-out characters, high tension and terrifying twists put Freeman up there with Harlan Coben in the psychological crime stratosphere.” In addition to his many intense, character-driven thrillers, Freeman enjoyed success in a completely different genre with his chick-lit comedy-drama THE AGENCY, which People Magazine described as “entertaining…witty…a delight.” THE AGENCY (published under the pseudonym Ally O’Brien) was written with first-person female narration and settings in London and New York. Freeman’s follow-up to THE AGENCY was WEST 57, which Booklist called “just the right mix of zany humor and sexy romance.”
